The Louisiana Legislature adjourns today. Gov. Bobby Jindal should mark the occasion by vetoing the session's most offensive and self-centered legislation: the 123-percent pay raise lawmakers gave themselves.
It won't be easy for him. He's said repeatedly that he won't veto the measure, and if he does now, he will have misled lawmakers. But if he doesn't veto it, he will have misled voters, breaking an unambiguous promise he made on the campaign trail to "prohibit" raises such as this.
Perhaps Gov. Jindal will do right by voters if a few more call him with their objections to the pay raise.
Contact him by e-mail through the "Interact" menu on his Web site, www.gov.louisiana.gov, by calling (225) 342-7015 or toll free at (866) 366-1121.

I voted for Jindal. I do not understand how he can just bold face lie to the people who put him in office and not live up the his campaign promises. This should be a simple veto, no questions asked. It was outlined in his campaign brochures. Sadly, I do not believe Jindal has any fight in him whatsoever or political balls, and that is what I find so disappointing.

AWOL lege votes on laws Sunday, Jun 22 2008
On Friday afternoon, the LA House of Representatives returned from their lunch break at 1:10 PM. Representative Reed Henderson, D-Chalmette, was listed as absent.
Henderson was in his vehicle driving in a rainstorm to pick up his wife to spend the weekend in Baton Rouge. While driving, he was on WWL-Radio by phone with talk show host, Spud McConnell.
McConnells show airs live from 1 PM to 4 PM weekdays. The podcast can be heard at: http://wwl.com/pages/1050632.php? (Fast forward to 13 minutes and 30 seconds to begin the call from Henderson)
Henderson acknowledged that he was not in the House Chamber, but he had left instructions of how he was to be voted on each bill in his absence.
LA House Rule 10.7 states:
No member shall be permitted to vote in any roll call vote in any case in which he is not within the House Chamber before the result of the vote has been announced by the presiding officer.
HR 3, 1973.
Looking at the House Journal for Friday, June 20, 2008, (starting at page 15) one sees that Rep. Henderson was regularly listed as voting on legislation. This despite, by his own admission, he was not in the House Chamber.
The House adjourned at 6:17 PM.
This raises serious questions about how business is conducted in the LA House of Representatives.
1. Why was Hendersons machine voted when he was clearly not in the House Chamber, in fact, not even in the Capitol city, much less in the Capitol Building?
2. Who voted Hendersons machine in violation of the House Rules?
3. Most importantly, what will the House do about this breach of its rules?
Finally, Henderson refers to himself (on tape) as honorable. Is this action that of an honorable person?
C.B.
Since $16,800 is a very meager annual salary, the real problem isn’t the actual pay raise.
I could understand raising it to 20, 25, or even 30K. If Mr. Jindal had never promised to veto the pay raise, this probably wouldn’t be an issue.
It’s a matter of keeping promises.

Did Jindal take your girlfriend in high school?
No, he did worse. He lied to me and all the rest of his supporters when he ran for governor last year.
And he needs to pay a price for it.
OK. You just seem a little obsessed.
