Pick up Max Hastings' new book, "Retribution, the Battle for Japan, 1944-45." The book is a survey of all the Asian battlefields at the close of WW II. Hastings is a historian who concludes Britain couldn't hold India, Burma, etc even if the war had not happened.
Hastings is a Brit, by the way.
