HAVANA (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had an "animated and warm" meeting with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro during a visit to Havana, state-run media said on Tuesday, but no photos or videos of the left-wing allies were made public.
Chavez, upon arrival on Monday for a two-day visit, told reporters he would meet with top Cuban officials including the ailing, 81-year-old Castro and Raul Castro, Fidel's younger brother, who took over as president in February.
"Now we have our team, it's the same team," he said, referring to the close ties he has forged between oil-rich Venezuela and Cuba since he took power.
The official Communist Party newspaper Granma said Chavez and Fidel Castro met for three hours on Monday, discussing topics that included "the food crisis, the financial crisis and the international energy situation."
Castro has been seen only in videos and photographs since July 2006 when he had intestinal surgery that forced him to cede power to his brother after ruling the country since the 1959 revolution.
The long-time leader occasionally writes newspaper columns, but his absence from view has fed unconfirmed rumors that his health continues to decline.
The last public images of Castro were in mid-January after a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In video broadcast, he looked frail but was shown chatting and taking photos with Lula.
Bolivian President Evo Morales met with Castro in May, after which he said the bearded revolutionary was "thin but lucid, as always a very wise man."
Castro officially resigned as president in February. His brother Raul Castro was then elected to formally replace him by the National Assembly.
That miserable old piece of sh!t is still alive?
In Fidel’s case, reanimated.
No doubt.
Whoa! Ya beat me!
It was (snicker) a no-brainer.
shades of abe lincoln at disneyland and the old animatronic display there for years.
fidel must stink something fierce by now, he’s been dead, what, almost a year and a half.? ;-)
That was a pretty good flic, btw.
There’s a terrific thriller/spy novel by Ted Bell called “SPY” that has an interesting take on the relationship between Chavez, Castro, Iran and MEXICO’S NORTHERN BORDER...
I think they sneaked Fidel to DisneyWorld in the middle of the night. He is now truly animated.
