'NYT' Sunday Preview: Gore Vidal Questions McCain's Time in Prison Camp (He made it up?)
New York Times ^ | June 12, 2008 | Greg Mitchell

Posted on 06/14/2008 8:18:28 AM PDT by tlb

NEW YORK In an interview for this Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine, famed novelist/essayist Gore Vidal appears to question Sen. John McCain's account of being imprisoned by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war.

Asked what he thinks of McCain, Vidal calls him a "disaster," then tells Deborah Solomon, "Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?"

Solomon replies: "Everyone knows he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam." To which Vidal responds: "That’s what he tells us."

Why would you doubt him? Solomon wonders. "He’s a graduate of Annapolis," Vidal explains. "I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there."

Asked how he felt when he heard about the passing earlier this year of his conservative nemesis, William F. Buckley, Vidal says, "I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred."

Sounds to me like he’s getting a little senile.

Now it begins: The Obama supporters in full cry. This one is typical: he hates this country and chooses to live abroad. Soros, the Hollywood crowd, this guy: they are all the same.

I won’t side with Vidal on this one. No matter how much I disagree with McCain on some of his more idiotic policies, I will always respect him for his service to and sacrifice for his country. No one can take that away from him.

Now, as to Vidal, I can’t wait for him to bring this one on. I can’t imagine anything that will enrage and energize veterans and patriotic Americans more than this insult.

That McCain is a disaster? Quite a few. That McCain made up his service record? Not a single one.

what a disgusting piece of human filth. he’s been out to pasture for a while, but clearly it is time to put him out of his misery.

can you imagine what the press would do to someone who made a similar accusation about obama?

Vidal explains. "I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there."

Interesting. If one reads this quickly, Vidal seems to say that he is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point. He's not.

McCain can be questioned on many things but to question his service and his imprisonment and torture will turn many people off to Obama and his supporters. McCain spent over 5 years as a POW, many years being tortured. That is 5 more years than Obama has ever served his country. I will gladly vote for McCain over Obama. Though McCain is very flawed and not my candidate, he is head and shoulders above the terrorist appeasing unpatriotic, America hating Obama.

Exactly. Living in the West Point area and graduating from West Point are two completely different animals.

Gore Vidal is an aged, dried-up, leftist, out-of-the-closet fag.

He's only of importance in the Marxist NYC-DC circuit of political elites and other aging fags.

LOL, I wonder if thisd fool would be willing to sit down with Bud Day,(see below a man who spent years in the prison camp along with John McCain.

“Col. George “Bud” Day, 83, is the most decorated service man since Gen. Douglas MacArthur, with more than 70 medals. A living legend”

Follow link to read what this amazing man had to say about the character and bravery of John McCain.
