Woman pretended to be mom of girl who got abortion, say officials
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 6/11/2008 | CHANDLER BROWN

A Hall County woman is serving a year in jail for pretending to be a girl's mother when she signed off on the girl's abortion.

In reality, Cindi Cook was the mother of the girl's boyfriend, who also was 16 when she became pregnant in early 2007.

Displeased that the baby would ruin her son's chance of going to college, Cook, 44, pressured the 16-year-old girl to have the abortion in the spring of 2007, found a clinic that would do it without her present, and paid for the procedure, DeKalb Solicitor General Robert James said Wednesday.

Last week, a judge sentenced Cook to a year in jail — the maximum for a misdemeanor — for interfering with custody and violating a parental notification law.

"This conduct is reprehensible," James said. "There's not a parent anywhere who'd be OK with what she did."

James said his office is now investigating whether the facility — Northside Women's Clinic in Chamblee— broke a state law that required parental notification when a girl under the age of 18 has an abortion.

According to its Web site, Northside Women's Clinic offers abortions through the 15th week of pregnancy, usually in about 10 minutes.

A woman who answered the phone Thursday morning said the clinic had no comment and did not have an attorney. She would not give her name or title.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is not identifying the girl because she is a minor.

More than a year after the abortion, "she's still struggling with the loss of the baby," said Fenn Little, her family's attorney. "She's getting better, but there's going to be a lot of counseling and issues that have to be addressed."

Through their attorney, the girl's parents issued this statement: "The actions of both Cindi Cook and the Northside Women's Clinic have affected our daughter's life with much pain this past year because of the loss of her baby. It was a sense of helplessness. As for us, they took away our right to be there and help our daughter during a time when she needed us most. The outcome of the trial is a positive step forward in the long healing process that we must go through as individuals and as a family."

The obvious solution to the problem is to remove the parental notification laws in that state. /sarc

That should have been a felony.

As for us, they took away our right to be there and help our daughter during a time when she needed us most.

They also killed your grandchild.

Should have been a manslaughter charge at the very least. I’d push for 1st degree murder. But you watch, the “kill the children” crown will hail her as a martyr when she’s released.

In one aspect you can’t blame the clinic this time, they had what they thought was the parents permission.

Yes, I can blame them. Did they even bother to check the "mother's" id? Ask to see the birth certificate naming the parents? Obviously not. They didn't want to know - bad for business.

Selfishness is the reason behind 99% of the abortions.

This story was posted yesterday, but the woman deserves to serve every day of her sentence. I certainly hoope that the parents of the girl sue her, the “clinic” and anyone else involved in any way. I further hope that Jesus see fit to NOT bless this monster with grand kids.

dentist, hair stylist, abortionist ... differences without distinction, right?

But there is no law that specifically requires parental consent in those cases.

Another reason to outlaw abortion.

If it was illegal, parents, boyfriends, and parents of boyfriends couldn’t so easily pressure girls into killing their babies.

"There's not a parent anywhere who'd be OK with what she did."

Sad to think, but, I bet there are a million parents who would do the exact same thing.

Totally different situation ,,, you the parent are present with them at the dentist,, you do indeed show id , your dental insurance card ,, the children are responding to you as the parent and dentistry isn’t the same as abortion ... in many if not most instances abortion is pushed on a young girl either directly or through coercion ... you may be a bit afraid of having the hygienist hit that sensitive tooth but there is no moral component to it and nobody has anything to gain or lose if you don’t get your teeth cleaned,,, with abortion you always have the life changing big money fears pushing people around... this woman deserves every minute of that year sentence... dealing with an adoption is a much cleaner proposition as you don’t have to lie to yourself... you actually are doing the right thing and have nothing to apologize for later in life,, this girl seems to have been mature enough to have gone down that path if she had been counseled by her parents and not this witch.

My dentist knows me by sight, knows my kids. If I, for some bizarre reason, had a friend take my kids to the dentist, I can absolutely guarantee that doc would do nothing beyond routine cleaning and maybe x-rays without my consent. If your dentist would do otherwise, get a new dentist.

BTW--every single doctor that I go to, whether it is for me or for my children, photocopies my driver's license along with my insurance card. When we go in for appointments, our med files are already waiting for the doctor--with my photocopied ID included. As far as I know, that's pretty standard.

There's a pretty good chance that a real doctor would notice the difference between photo ID and someone posing as a parent, but abortionists aren't real doctors. They're not even real humans.
