I thought I had read somewhere that the bow and arrow could have been invented as far back as 30,000 to 40,000 years ago.

Anyway you look at it, the first guy that thought of tying a thin piece of hide at both ends of a stout stick and launching a smaller stick from it was the Leonardo da Vinci of his time. The guy that came up with fletchings tied to the arrow shaft to create spin and greatly improve accuracy wasn't a slouch either.

"When the bow and arrow appeared in North America, roughly 1,500 years ago, it eventually replaced the atlatl (spear thrower) and dart. The introduction of the bow and arrow, a different weapon delivery system, demanded some innovative thinking and technology. In other words, one could not just shoot a dart from a bow. Components like the shaft and arrow point needed to be reinvented."

Obviously the bow and arrow were the invention of the Piranha Brothers, shortly after they hit on “The Other, Other Operation.”

Stunning. The North Americans invent the bow and arrow in 500 AD and use rocks for arrow heads, while over 3000 years earlier, the Egyptians were using iron and bronze on their arrowheads.

It makes you wonder if the North Americans invented the bow and arrow independent of the Eastern Hemisphere or if a reed boat with bows and arrows didn’t wash up on shore for them to reverse engineer.

You take it for granted that you can order up some aluminum Easton shafts personalized in length for your personal draw, and Muzzie broadheads for your PSE bow.

Odd--I was just taking that for granted yesterday!...;^)

The interesting part is that they didn’t have bows and arrows until 500 AD.

That must have come as quite a surprise to Ötzi the Iceman when he was shot in the back by a time traveler from 500AD.
