Abortion rights activists are using Saturdays anniversary of a milestone in the pro-choice movement to focus a little fire on one of Republican presidential candidate John McCains potential weak spots.
During his 25 years in office, Sen. McCain has consistently voted to block low-income womens access to birth control, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan said in a statement Friday. Voters need to know that John McCain is not only against abortion, he is against birth control.
Saturday marks the anniversary of Supreme Courts 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut decision, which struck down a law that prohibited the use of contraceptives.
No surprise that abortion rights groups oppose McCain, but Democrats think they think have a real opportunity to dampen enthusiasm for the Arizona Republican among female voters particularly independents by highlighting his long legislative record for voting against abortion rights. Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama, on the other hand, supports abortion rights.
A March poll of 1,200 women in 16 battleground states, commissioned by Planned Parenthood, showed that about half of the women who backed McCain also support abortion rights. Half of the women surveyed in the poll also said they didnt know enough about McCains views on abortion to say whether he is in step or out of step with their own outlook.
On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood and lefty Internet video group Brave New Films are teaming up to ping inboxes with three videos highlighting McCains views on abortion. The last Brave New Films video The Real McCain 2 has already been seen almost 1.9 million times on YouTube.

Best endorsement for McLame I've seen to date!
"On the other hand, Senator Obama sponsored and promoted legislation in Illinois that allowed abortion doctors and nurses to stand around and watch a baby who survives an abortion to die slowly and painfully without getting sued or arrested. Senator Obama is a champion of what is important to us."
John McCain is against birth control or against the public funding of birth control? There is a vast difference here and I had not heard he was against pregnancy prevention.
Anyone?
Yep, about the ONLY thing he's done well consistently is piss off NARAL, notwithstanding the fact that he's made his share of enemies on the pro-life side as well. If Ms. Schitz believes the pro-abort propaganda that McCain's consistent (at least up to now) opposition to abandoning babies who survive abortions and leaving them to starve to death somehow constitutes a "potential weak point," she really needs to get her head out of her derriere.
To these people, birth control and abortion are one and the same.
Remember that this claim is coming from the same folks who believe that embryonic stem cell researach is currently illegal. They are apparently unable to comprehend the difference between banning something and refusing to support it with federal tax dollars.
“John McCain is against birth control or against the public funding of birth control?”
This is a typical leftist twist on an issue. If your against government funding on something then they often claim that you’re against it.
If NARAL is against you, you’re doing something right!
And the Federal government should be funding this with taxpayer money because....?
Mainly, he vetoes taxpayer dollars going to pay for abortions. No wonder the Abortocrats hate him. :)

During his years in office, Sen. Obama has consistently voted to kill babies.
Get a dictionary from the library and look up "abortofacient," Einstein.
It's time for them to go.
Democrats are incapable of seeing a difference. As far as they are concerned, if you are opposed to subsidizing something (art, education, employee training, birth control, housing, farming, whatever), you are against it. Period.
Somehow, the party of "nuance" is incapable of making any distinctions at all. A liberal I once knew told me often that if the government doesn't subsidize an artist, then that artist is being censored.
So he is not, as I suspected, against peventative birth control. The left lied...gee, whoda thunk it?
Abortion has always been up to individual states, according to the Constitution. I’m not here to argue the details, only the facts. It’s a fact that no sitting President has had an impact on writing legislation dealing with Abortion. Wether they agree with it or not. A President can only sign it into law if the Legislature lets him or writes the bill in the forst place.
It is simply not a valid issue that will decide an election. The public majority does not care either way.
Premeditated murder is against the law...EXCEPT for killing unborn children. Where is the outrage? The shame?
I am not up with the US laws on govt supported agencies but isn’t it a conflict of interest for Planned Parenthood to solicit votes that support their stance on abortion seeing that that receive Govt funding. What they are basically doing is spending Govt money to influence the outcome of an election.
I am sure that here is Aus, there are laws against that.
Mel
Good for McCain.
