Neither party was particularly supportive of Israel at the time, support was expected to come from Europe. That's what made RFK stand out. And what got him killed. It's not a party thing, Nixon recognized the grave errors Ike made in the region, and changed his outlook too.

RFK by today’s standards would be like what we have seen in folks such as Joe Leiberman or Zell Miller, the conservitive Dems the radical left in the present day Dem party has chased out.
