Anti-Euthanasia Group Campaigns Against Canada Assisted Suicide Bill

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- A member of the Canadian Parliament has announced his intent to propose a bill that would legalize assisted suicide in Canada. But one leading anti-euthanasia group isn't waiting for official introduction of a bill before asking pro-life advocates to start speaking out against it.

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition has launched a letter-writing campaign asking people to contact their MPs and urge strong opposition to a potential bill from MP Francine Lalonde, a member of the Bloc Québécois party.

The organization has written sample letters but EPC director Alex Schadenberg encourages people to write their own to express their views.

The letter says assisted suicide and euthanasia "directly threatens the lives of people with disabilities and other vulnerable people in our society."

It points out what reports from Oregon, the only American state to have legalized assisted suicide, show is a recurring problem.

"Depression is often undiagnosed or poorly-treated. Combined with other life-threatening or chronic conditions, the cry for help is often made by way of a request to die," it says.

"A recent new report indicated that in the State of Oregon, where assisted suicide is legal, none of the 49 people who died by legal assisted suicide in that State were referred for a psychological or psychiatric assessment," the letter continues.

As an alternative, it touts promoting "measures that increase the quality of life for people who experience difficult life conditions" rather than "measures that threaten their very existence."

"At a time when many Canadians do not have access to caring and supportive end of life care, we need to promote compassionate end-of-life care and ethical palliative care instead of sanctioning euthanasia or assisted suicide," the sample letter says.

Canada previously dealt with assisted suicide when the Supreme Court of Canada issued a 5-4 ruling preventing Sue Rodriguez from having a physician kill her.

Lalonde put forward the last bill to attempt to legalize the practice that did not put Canada in league with European nations like the Netherlands and Belgium.

The outcome of what happens in Canada could also be affected by the American debate.

Voters in Washington state may decide in November on whether or not to make it the second state after Oregon to legalize assisted suicide. A victory could motivate some Canadian MPs to push for a new bill.

Yet rather than treating the illness, the culture of death would prefer to kill the sufferer.

Yet rather than treating the illness, the culture of death would prefer to kill the sufferer.

And downplay the role of better palliative care for the terminally ill.

The mantra of the CoD has always been, "Somebody's gotta die!"

And a lot of the assisted suicide/euthanasia victims are depressed or suffering from things like chronic fatigue syndrome, they ARE NOT terminally ill.

Yes, one need not be a terminal case to those who would deem their quality of life to be less than desirable.

Francine Lalonde really should do this first, and then come and tell us all how great it is before demanding legislative action.

Frankly, I don't think Francine's gonna' be able to demonstrate that her death changes much of anything.

Rather than play games with the language, I wish these groups would address the issues honestly. For example...

The letter says assisted suicide and euthanasia "directly threatens the lives of people with disabilities and other vulnerable people in our society."

This is correct reporting. The sample letter does incorrectly equate assisted suicide and euthansia, as a singular.

Note, however, the group slips up later: "[...] sanctioning euthanasia or assisted suicide," the sample letter says.

Ah, so they are different!

"Depression is often undiagnosed or poorly-treated. Combined with other life-threatening or chronic conditions, the cry for help is often made by way of a request to die," it says.

It's a dirty little secret that we don't have effective treatment for about 1 in 5 cases of depression, even when we use medication combined with therapy, and more aggressive techniques.

We don't have a magic wand to cute everyone or remove all from their hell....let's not pretend that we do.

Yet rather than treating the illness, the culture of death would prefer to kill the sufferer.

Interesting comment on the Culture of Death, but the proponents of that aren't really relevant here. What you don't mention are the majority... the Culture of Respect (for individuals' wishes--whether FOR LIFE or not) and the Culture of Compassion (believing that forcing someone to endure torture against his will is evil).

"A recent new report indicated that in the State of Oregon, where assisted suicide is legal, none of the 49 people who died by legal assisted suicide in that State were referred for a psychological or psychiatric assessment," the letter continues.

In other words (what they DON'T say): A recent new report indicated that in the State of Oregon, where assisted suicide is legal, NONE of the 49 people who died by legal assisted suicide in that State had judgment that was impaired by a psychiatric or psychological disorder (such as depression), following examination by at least two physicians.

Sorta blows away the whole "depression" straw man argument!

It's also not pain control that's the problem. Since the Death with Dignity law went into effect, there's never been more than a third of the patients reporting inadequate pain control...whereas nearly all complain about the loss of autonomy (something that the Culture of Disrepect wants to make even worse, by taking away self-determination!).
