FLDS raid appears to have backfired
Los Angeles Times ^ | 5/31/08 | Miguel Bustillo and Nicholas Riccardi

ELDORADO, TEXAS -- As officials haggled Friday over how to return more than 400 children to their parents, it was becoming increasingly clear that Texas' audacious attempt to rein in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had backfired -- and become a lesson in the difficulty of cracking down on the 10,000-member polygamist sect.

....

The town also was abuzz over an anticipated mass voter registration by the FLDS. Hours after the court first ruled against the state, two members of the sect walked into the county clerk's office and requested 300 voter registration forms, a potentially tide-turning number in a county with 1,800 voters.

Doran, who has been sheriff here for 12 years, downplayed that. "I'm not worried about it. The citizens have always stood behind me, and if the community feels this is an attempt to take over Schleicher County, I know they'll stand together. Once we begin impaneling some grand juries and the criminal case comes to light, we'll see the tide turn once again."

That sheriff is in deeper trouble than he thinks.

I bet there are already some FLDS registered voters. Grand juries are chosen from the list of registered voters. If he comes up with a grand jury with no FLDS members, he better be prepared to offer up a very, very good explanation of why this is not selective exclusion.

The plot thickens...

These kids have seen the real world now. I know they say they told the foster families not to let them see TV and video games, but you know they did.

These kids are not going to want to go back after seeing how the real world works...IMO

I am not a Mormon due to their doctrines being proven anti-Biblical. However, the government intruding on religion is a powderkeg. I am truly shocked more people did not riot after Janet Reno burned out, I mean, rescued children from Waco.

So in other words, you condone the children being messed up by an unconstitutional and unlawful power grab by the courts and CPS?

At least no innocent children were burned to death this time.

“That sheriff is in deeper trouble than he thinks.”

Correct. For two reasons, the first is he made the county and its citizens look very bad nationally.

Second, he won the 2004 election by only 903 votes out of 1,900 (approx) votes. Look for a heap o trouble for the sheriff at the ballot box in November.

I think they jumped the gun by relying on an anonymous phone call to seize the children.

If there is proof of child abuse, I think the children should have been removed to a safe house with a non-abusing parent.

Please understand that if any of the allegations are true I do not condone them. That being said I hope the FLDS sues the c$ap out of the CPS and any law enforcement official that was involved, I also hope they go after the Judge's bond. CPS needs to have their ears pinned back big time. If in Texas, they were outside the law I also hope they sue them personally under Title 18 USC.

That’s not how it works with such groups. They are given ample opportunity to go sew wild oats, with the welcome back if they choose. Don’t go thinking that they are kept in a cellar. The sectarians I have met all chose to stay out of the world, some to obey the Bible, some because the world doesn’t give a damn about them. Easy choice.

Time for Texas to pay for the slippery slope ride.

...messed up huh?...guaranteed they will be either messed up by the cult they are living in - and/or grow up to mess others up that follow them...I agree the CPS move was a whole lot of stupid, but so is anyone on either side of this battle who tries to hide behind "it's for the good of the children".

"it's for the good of the children"

Mostly it's for the good of the rule of law.

Your assumption is in opposition to the facts of the case. Prejudiced against people who don’t think living in the filth of the world is a good idea?

>>I agree the CPS move was a whole lot of stupid, but so is anyone on either side of this battle who tries to hide behind “it’s for the good of the children”.>>

That’s one way of trying to say you side with CPS in this case.

This case was lost when it became obviouis the CPS was skirting the rules. Once it was revealed the source of the call was a fake AND they had talked to the man named in the warrant, it became an issue as to what CPS was doing rather than the children in danger.

This was compounded when the judge tried to skirt the law and create a cookie cutter “whatever” order that eliminated the mandate for individualized findings of fact and conclusions of law.

The sad part is the fact that children who were in real danger are now back to square one solely because CPS thought they could get away with doing whatever they wanted if it looked ok to the MSM.

The young people of THIS group are most certainly not “given ample opportunity to go sew wild oats”. This is not the Amish, this is the FLDS in the Warren Jeffs era. Once they voluntarily leave or are kicked out, they are never welcome back. These kids have had a taste of the outside world that other FLDS children and young adults have never had. They will have a different perspective going forward. They will no longer unquestioningly believe the lies they are told by cult leaders about the outside world.

What makes you think TV and video games are the “real word”? They might be what many people gravitate toward. But that, in no way, substantiates reality.
