U.S. District Court: Groups ask to shield wolves

Conservationists who oppose the removal of wolves from under federal protection - and who call the delisting unlawful - sought an emergency injunction Thursday to stop the animals' killing.

Last month, a coalition of 11 environmental groups sued the U.S. Department of the Interior in an effort to keep gray wolves in the Northern Rockies region on the endangered species list.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service director H. Dale Hall announced the delisting decision in February, and it took effect March 28, divesting the gray wolf of its Endangered Species Act protections.

Without those protections, environmentalists say, the gray wolf population will never reach sustainable levels and is likely to enter a long-term decline.

About 17 lawyers representing as many state agencies and nonprofit policy groups defended the management plan, which requires states to maintain a minimum of 300 wolves. Agency officials say they are committed to maintaining at least 450 wolves and that the actual population likely will be about 1,000.

The region's wolf population is increasing by about 24 percent annually...

These liberals activists / alleged journalists always leave out details like :

The introduced wolves are from Canada.

The Canadian wolves are much larger than the American wolves.

Released Canadian wolves have shown up in Colorado and elsewhere outside the designed Yellowstone NP.

Surprise.

And we want these larger Canadian predators that hunt prey in packs, and can hunt humans and their animals, why exactly?

Thanks for the ping.

I don’t know anything about this judge Malloy other than reading something the other day about him not wanting to postpone this hearing regarding the injunction.

Do you know if he’s in the bag for the enviros or just wants to get this proceeding out of the way? I don’t have a good feeling about him but nothing to base it on.

A federal judge in Montana has rejected a request by the government to delay a lawsuit seeking to place the gray wolf back on the endangered species list, saying he’s “unwilling to risk more deaths.”

In rejecting the agency’s request for a two-week extension in the case, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy set a hearing for May 29 in Missoula.

“The court is unwilling to risk more deaths by delaying its decision on plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction,” Molloy wrote in Wednesday’s court order.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had argued that even if the wolves were still on the endangered list, many would have still been killed by government wildlife agents responding to livestock attacks.

Molloy wrote that assertion was “neither compelling nor comforting.”

The 30-06 is sighted and ready. Some wolves have recently been observed around the mountains immediately south of Pocatello. Most of the folks who live back in that area are well prepared to deal with the wolves if they pose a threat to their livestock, pets or family.
