Villaraigosa wants to use gun restrictions, databases to take on gangs (seize cars & evictions too)

The mayor's proposals also include seizing cars used in gang activity and helping landlords evict people who illegally possess guns and ammunition.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday unveiled plans to target gangs and guns -- including confiscating cars used in gang-related crimes -- with a series of new city ordinances.

The mayor proposed giving landlords the power to evict tenants convicted of using and possessing illegal weapons and ammunition. And he promised to push other new laws to regulate the purchase of ammunition and storage of weapons.

The proposed ordinances include banning .50-caliber, military-style ammunition; licensing ammunition vendors; requiring gun-store owners to make regular gun inventories and report to local law enforcement; and outlawing installation of secret gun compartments in vehicles.

"We're upping the ante," Villaraigosa said.

Chuck Michel, an attorney who represents the National Rifle Assn. and California Rifle Assn., called the mayor's proposals "a rehash."

"The bottom line is that the majority of these proposals have either been tried and failed elsewhere because they don't focus on the criminal or they are covered by proposed bills still being vetted by the Legislature," he said.

Michel added that a recent ruling drastically limits individual cities from regulating guns and ammunition.

Villaraigosa called for federal legislation that would include micro-stamping every bullet produced in the United States. Working with Councilman Jack Weiss, the mayor also proposed a measure to require that sales of ammunition in Los Angeles occur face to face, not over the Internet.

So far this year 670 people have been victims of guns crimes, and 70% of all shootings were gang-related, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Because landlords might fear retaliation from gang members, the city's legal team will work to force suspects who illegally possess weapons and ammunition out of their homes...

Unless they're Mexicans and unless they're illegals.

You watch and see.

“secret gun compartments in vehicles.”

If they are hidden and secret, you won’t find them until you toss the car. And if you toss a car and find an empty secret compartment, how do you convince a jury that it’s for guns and not something else?

This big crackdown is going to crack down on normal people more than gangs.

And most of the gang members are illegal insurgent criminal invaders who Villaraigosa has given the keys to the city.

So I guess it's not feasible to ask Villaraigosa to go after the gangs, that would not be PC as they are not citizens.

Bingo. Go after the guns, not the gang-bangers--brilliant idea, Villalaraza.

No one cares about this piece of shiet. He is a racist and will do everything in his power to promote Mexicans, legal or not. He has no national identity, only a racial identity. If we had any Identification Requirements while voting he would be cleaning our toilets.

Gang members don’t get guns legitimately. DUH, more restrictions against legal citizenry more freedoms for illegal aliens.

Same, tired, old, anti-gun California crap. I'm sure the gang-bangers are laughing at these proposals. After all, criminals don't obey laws anyway, right?

Its all BS.

Prosecuting the gangs and confiscating their "stuff" ain't gonna work....and "gun restrictions"...(snicker)...give me a semi break.

What will make some headway against gangs is to kill them....wherever they are.

Anything less will be pissing up a wet rope......a colossal waste of time, money, manpower and energy.

Besides, what is he going to do with any criminals he arrests? Put them in jail? Where?

The ever so nimble NIMBY. Throw the bums out. The solutions seems so simple until the bums land in your neighbor's yard.

There is an answer to gang violence in LA:

Dispatch them.
Without regard to age or gender.
Within 48 hours of conviction.
In a public place.

Oh, goody! He’s gonna adopt the Rudy plan. Public frisking for all!

Then, he’ll spend millions of dollars defending the city on civil rights violations—and will lose them all.

What a dufus.

It’s not like it’s some kind of mystery as to where the gang members are. There is no difficulty finding them. The LAPD knows exactly who they are and where they hang out as well as where all the various territories are which they patrol, commit crimes and enforce their boundaries.

All the other nonsense about tracking bullets, registering guns and anything else are just nonsense to avoid doing what everybody in the gang infested neighborhoods knows needs to be done - sweep up all those gangbangers and put them in jail!!!d They can be put into jail on RICO charges and then deported (since most of them are illegal).

Gangs in LA know they are safe because its a sanctuary city and they have a Mexican running the city so there is little chance that he will turn on Mexico, the Mexican Mafia or La Raza/LULAC/MALDEF and start arresting young latino criminals. It’s not like hardworking lower class latinos in the neighborhoods where the gangsters live wouldn’t be thrilled with the eradication of these gangs. The only people who are unwilling to get rid of them are the elected officials in City Hall and the local ACLU and mexican-interest groups.

Let ‘em kill each other.

Just how are these proposals by the LA “mayor” going to reduce gang gun crime?

Here’s a thought: If the cops start using .50 calibers the gangs might leave town for greener pastures—like San Fran.
