U.S. gas: So cheap it hurts
CNN News ^ | 6 May 2008 | Steve Hargreaves,

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Despite daily headlines bemoaning record gas prices, the U.S. is actually one of the cheaper places to fill up in the world.

Out of 155 countries surveyed, U.S. gas prices were the 45th cheapest, according to a recent study from AIRINC, a research firm that tracks cost of living data.

The difference is staggering. As of late March, U.S. gas prices averaged $3.45 a gallon. That compares to over $8 a gallon across much of Europe.

The U.S. has always fought to keep gas prices low, and the current debate among presidential candidates on how to keep them that way has been fierce.

But those cheap gas prices - which Americans have gotten used to - mean they feel price spikes like the ones we're experiencing now more acutely than citizens from other nations which have had historically more expensive fuel.

While I realise that these other countries have always had expensive gas, I’m wondering if their prices have increased by the same percentage or so that ours have over the last year?

so let’s just add $4.00 tax for the government, as if they need more of our money, and we can be just like everybody else and feel better.

Let’s take out that part of the price in each of those countries that is Government taxes and then compare the price of fuel in each of those countries.

I'm not much of an economist but - doesn't the nation's supply of oil (in the ground) have to be factored into this headline?

What happens to the US price ranking when compared to nations that have the natural resources that we do?

Remember, I'm no economist.

Wheres the puke warning? Taxes make up most of the difference in those countries. Why isn’t Chavez empire noted where its around 16 cents a gallon?

I’m wondering if their prices have increased by the same percentage

For the most part, the overall trend line is the same or very similar.

I have seen several articles in the last couple of days talking about how it is a good thing that gas prices are high. Looks like the MSM is strapping it on to defend the onslaught against the RATS because they have restricted supply and caused gas prices to rise. . . .IMHO

Gee - that makes me feel so much better that we're cheaper than everyone else when I fill up my gas tank at prices that have DOUBLED since last year.

We’re not Europe. People and places are a lot closer together there and as a result they have comprehensive mass/rail transit options that are lacking here. The vast majority of Americans do not have the option of commuting via mass transit, for better or for worse. It’s the way this country was built after WWII.

Another steaming pantload from the Commie News Network ...

"The US has always fought to keep gas prices low"
No, the goober-mint is always doing everything it can to push those prices up.

"... debate among prez candidtes ... "
Did I hear any candidate propose opening up more access for drilling or fast-tracking of red-tape to allow new refineries to be built?
... sound of crickets chirping.

Who actually watches the drivel on that dictator-loving channel?

United Kingdom $8.38

The UK is a net exporter I believe. But how do you provide “FREE” health care unless you charge the peons over 8 freaking dallars a galon for gasoline?

I had a friend who came here to the US. He was whining about no free health care. I said “If you give me the difference between what you pay in gas, taxes, sales tax, etc,. etc., I’LL PROVIDE YOU FREE HEALTH CARE”. I figured it was about $500 per month.

Uh, oh. The Dems' oil bubble is about to burst.

They were counting on the doom an gloom continuing thru Nov.

Here CNN is trying to do their part to prop up oil prices by pretending they're not so bad.

In actuality the oil bubble is bursting...good GDP numbers today indicate no recession...what's a Dem to do?

Every dam one of those countries save Iceland have immense public transportation systems.

If you take ALL of Europe including the UK, the USA would stretch all the way from one end to the other all the way to near Israel. The USA is as big as all of Europe.

Now tell me how we are to build such a transportation system in this country like they have to cover the whole continent? Oh it can be done I suppose, but at what cost? And yet it would NOT include the remote areas of the USA I.E. north of Green Bay WI.

What they would say is..Tuff s&^t for those people. If they wanna live up there then they can suffer. That is about the size of their thoughts. Idiots! I wonder where they get their brains.

That chart is natural gas, not gasoline.

They carge that much for their fuel because it is subsidized. You wanna pay taxes to pay for cheap gas? This was all on Fox News just the other day.
