Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) --
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton quickly apologized Friday after citing the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy as a reason to remain in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination despite increasingly long odds.
"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever," the former first lady said.
The episode occurred as Clinton campaigned in advance of the June 3 South Dakota primary.
Responding to a question from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board about calls for her to drop out of the race, she said: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. You know I just, I don't understand it," she said, dismissing the idea of abandoning the race.
Clinton said she didn't understand why, given this history, some Democrats were calling for her to quit.
Her remark about an assassination during a primary campaign drew a quick response from aides to Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama.
"Senator Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.
Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said the senator was only referring to her husband and Kennedy "as historical examples of the nominating process going well into the summer and any reading into it beyond that would be inaccurate and outrageous."
Even so, Clinton decided within a couple of hours to make a personal apology.

She’s made her point, she can afford to back off a little.
Well...I guess there’s nothing more to see here, right Mrs. Obama? ;-)

Yeah, she says, Kennedy’s were on her mind a lot recently.......Bobby Kennedy to be specific.
LOL!
Way too late.
Not to mention what happened to JFK’s son on his way to the NY Senate seat. Anyone else read this as a final warning from the CCM? (Of course, Pallidino is in jail this time...)
Oh, I think her Thighness has really put the pin in the party hog now. I can see this slip pick up legs and come back to haunt her.
“So....other than that, Mrs. Lincoln....how did you like the play?”
Make a threat, then say, “Oops, sorry!” Yeah, that’ll work. The MSM reaction will be most interesting.
Maybe she wants to be far, far away from Obama's [possible] election victory?
For if Michelle Obama was pissed off before, she's livid after this.
I suspect Hillary is losing it. She is not qualified to the the President of the USA.
Hillary! was merely pointing out that the assassination of Bobby was a good mnemonic. It helps everyone remember that the Californiz primary is in June. The “offense” is feigned.
In other words, the usual gaffe-”I’m so offended”-apology kabuki.
Wow! That was a major league gaffe on many levels!!
But...but...but...I thought she was the smartest woman in the world.
Then there's why Sirhan Sirhan shot Bobby (June 5)...His policy on Israel...
Kennedy was defeated in Oregon. California was crucial for him in his contest with Eugene McCarthy. RFK barely won the primary; but still it was not over. McCarthy got ready for New York another extremely close contest.
The point is Party leaders were deciding who. Who could do best in the general election. RFK had the Kennedy name and "charisma." Alright, so the similarity (HRC V. RFK) starts to fall apart with "charisma."
(Did you know that a man named Kennedy was elected mayor of Cleveland during those years -- he hardly campaigned, he was not connected in any with with the mainstream politicos; he had the name. Period. If memory serves he stepped aside and never served as mayor.)
What does HRC have to apologize for? This is nuts! These phony issues are weapons!
They are used against the right all the time and the stupid right has for decades been derailed trying to explain -- as the leftist pukes let loose with round after round of more "issues." There's never debate because they are smears.
lolz
