Catholic School Sued over "English Only" Policy
CJ Online ^ | May 20, '08 | Associated Press

(Wichita) Four Hispanic families are suing St. Anne's Catholic School over a policy that requires students to speak English at all times while at school. The lawsuit, filed Monday, calls for an end to this policy and asks for an order barring similar policies at other diocese schools. And it asks for court costs and unspecified damages for diiscrimination and emotional suffering. The lawsuit was filed by Mike and Clara Silva, Maria and Fermin Fernandez, Guadalupe Cruz-Tello and Alma Contreras on behalf of themselves and their minor children. The diocese said the school enacted the policy in response to four students who were using Spanish to bully others and put down teachers and administrators. The majority of the school's 243 students are white. It has 75 Hispanic students, 27 Asian students and two who are black. Lawyers for the Hispanic families contend bullying was not the reason for the policy and cited a letter the school sent saying that the more students are immersed in the English language the better their chances for improvement and success.

This is not an isolated incident. The very large and growing Hispanic lobby that is seeking the Hispanicization of American culture naturally includes the nation's Catholic parochial school system. To see how important it is to save this threatened and vitally important educational asset, see Bill Bennett's 4/23 NRO article "Go Wichita."

Where do these people get the money to bring these lawsuits and appeals? We are led to believe they are just poor salt of the earth dirtbags too stupid to learn the language.

They are fronts. A far more sinister, powerful, and monied force is destroying our country through the oligarchic courts.

Lurking in the background are the ACLU types.

I’ll bet this lawsuit has much broader liberal connections than a few hispanic parents. Another end run to kill off
religious based schools.

I can understand your questioning this, but what it boils down to is audacity of ANYONE to demand that schools in an English-speaking country, such as ours, must accept any other language. It's another obvious ploy to destroy the American culture.

Sorry, but IMMERSION is the BEST way to learn a foreign language. These parents should be THANKING the school - not suing them. Absolutely ridiculous.

My mother-in-law didn’t speak a word of English till the first day of first grade (she spoke only Polish at home). I don’t recall her EVER complaining about it when we’ve discussed it, and in fact, she doesn’t seem bothered at all by the fact that she had to learn English that way. It was common and accepted that that was the way it was! You came to America - you learn English - end of story...

“Sorry, but IMMERSION is the BEST way to learn a foreign language.”

I don’t think they want to learn English. I think they want us to speak Spanish. They also want every part of the US that could have been considered to be at one point Mexican territory.

You left Mexico why? And now you want your new home in the US to be part of Mexico why?

Quite amazing to observe; but young minds 'wired' for language and language adaption and they learn so quickly.

Just as 'Green' is not for reasons of our Environment; and Government 'health care' is not for our health. . .and the ACLU is not for our 'Freedom'. Neither is this lawsuit having to do with discrimination.

If there are problems in school; these kids should be told not to get mad; just get even, by learning the language and excelling. Just don't tell anyone. . .

Isn’t this a PRIVATE school? Don’t you agree to follow the rules when you sign up? I must be missing something.

***EMOTIONAL SUFFERING***?

And whose fault is that? They sent their kids off to an English-only school, and then they sue the school because they, the parents, haven’t taught their kids to speak English. Yeah, sure, that’s the ticket. I think I’ll go buy some house paint and then sue the store because I don’t know how to paint a house.

I attended Catholic schools for 12 yrs. and can safely say that the priests and nuns who ran those schools wouldn’t have stood for this BS for even a moment. Those kids and their parents would have been shown the door pronto!

It is the Catholic school system that needs to get tough and fight this lawsuit for the sake of the system itself.

The push Spanish in the grammar schools as the second language. It shouldn't even be taught in grammar school.

ENGLISH, ENGLISH, ENGLISH!!

Make it the National language. It's long overdue. It's the FIRST thing I would do as Prez....along with ENGLISH ONLY ballots. English IS a requirement for citizenship.

P.S. I'm sick and tired of hearing Press 1 for Spanish when I make a phone call.

Hey, they believed Bush when he promised a "new America". Now they are suing to get it.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. This is our reward for unbridled TOLERANCE.
Chances are the people bringing the suit are Wetbacks Illegally in our Country.
They should have no standing without citizenship, which according to the rules Speaking ANd unserstanding English is a prerequisite for citizenship.

Ship them out .

I think you both make good points. Traditionally, immigrants who came here from non-English speaking countries were ANXIOUS to see that they and their children learned the language. They WANTED to assimilate into this culture so they could be successful in the new land of opportunity that they considered home. No more. Everything possible is being done (bilingualism, etc.)by the government and the ethnocentric lobbies to discourage assimilation. This has been exacerbated by a Hispanic movement that feels American culture should accomodate itself to the immigrant. The fact that Mexico is so close to America makes a bad situation worse. And it’s well established fact that children immersed in a language learn it much more rapidly than older people. Also, there is the indoctrination that Mexicans receive that they really “own” the Southwest United States! They bring this notion with them when they come here.

Exactly! It’s sort of like enlisting in the army and then deciding to rewrite the military code.

Right. I think “emotional suffering” is just the crap the lawyers invented because they have no rational grounds for a lawsuit.
