Alleged Assault Controversy (High School Principle Supports Criminal Behavior)

The principal of T.C. Roberson High School says an alleged assault on a student has been blown out of proportion, but the teen's mother says her son is the victim and the school isn't sticking up for him. Principle Bob Weinkle says he ordered an internal investigation of the incident, and says while there may have been as assault, he doesn't believe it had a sexual motive. However, the 15-year old victim's mother says that is not the case. Elizabeth Murray says two boys pinned her son against a wall and sexually assaulted him while he was clothed. The Buncombe County sheriff's office has assigned a sexual assault investigator to the case. That officer will determine if the charges need to be upgraded to a sex offense, or if additional charges should be pressed. Weinkle says if that happens, he would ask for the charges to be dropped, and says he would serve as a character witness for the two accused teens. Murray says she is shocked that the school would not stand up for her son, who she feels is the real victim. Deputies say the alleged assault is also being investigated under the North Carolina hazing law. They say if the incident did happen when school faculty weren't present, staff could also face charges.

Not many details on this assault except the principle would be a character reference for the assaulting parties. I would like to get an opinion on whether you believe this is a sexual crime, is it homosexual, or is it what all young teenage boys do? Also, if this had been a female, what do you think would have happened? Is this simply the school protecting its corrupt self?

I’d wait until the sheriff’s report. The mother calls it a sexual assault, probably based on her son’s report. I’d prefer more information.

not enough info to make an intelligent judgement, but I am glad that they got the local gendarmes involved. too many people rely upon school authorities to coverup-er-deal with the episode.

the report is too sketchy to form an opinion one way or the other. The statements of the principal are quite odd, though.

Don't know, because I wasn't there. Point of fact, none of us were. Unless I was there or interviewed the participants myself, I have no way of knowing the guilt or innocence of anyone involved or the nature of the act perpetrated.

Elizabeth Murray says two boys pinned her son against a wall and sexually assaulted him while he was clothed. Well, after reading this, I think that I can discern what happened. I used to see this kind of behavior when I was in high school anytime the football jerks were around in the hallways. Sexual assualt? No. Bullying? Yes.

I wondered when we’d start seeing militant homosexual violence on the street, if that’s what this is.

Thinking back to my school days, (yes, way back) I wonder if a “wedgie” - especially the “atomic” variety - would be considered a sexual assault? I'm not saying this is the case here as I have no information other than what is posted - just a thought.

Roberson High School reviews by students and teachers:
--snip:
Posted January 25, 2008 My child was at TCR for half of her freshman year and I am relieved that she is no longer there. From an academic standpoint, the school is solid. However, the environment of the school in terms of safety and discipline is poor despite the introduction of the Freshman Academy. I do not feel that the administration has a handle on what transpires inside and outside of the halls each day. And, when the administration does have knowledge, they can be slow to react -- a case of too little too late. Truly, the best way for good kids and good students to survive this school is to track in all honors classes. But even that won't completely safeguard them from much of the nastiness that occurs. Other comments cite the school as good.

On the website, they appear to spell it both ways. Gotta wonder about the state of proofreading these days.

Ahh, Charlotte schools’ new bullying policy is working, I see.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it is a farce, designed to protect only certain types of people from being bullied.
Jeff Katz will probably discuss this at 3 pm eastern on WBT-1110.
