well, the toll now is 19509. but local authorities estimates that the eventual toll may be over 50,000,because there are still thousands of people buried under the rubbles......
The relative data today: Toll:19,509; Injured:102,100; But luckily,13,400+ people have be rescued from rubbles by now.
My most devout prayers for those poor innocents,
Dear God in Heaven....please help them, all of them.
Easy to explain. Better construction! Many modern buildings incorporate more stringent design codes. This is true in Kobe, Japan as well as in the US and Europe. The greatest amount of damage is caused by lateral forces of vibration. Over time, those forces weaken rigid, inflexible structures like concrete or masonry. Wood-frame and steel-frame structures do a better job of absorbing the harmonic vibration from earthquakes. Heavily reinforced concrete structures can also absorb lateral force impact but are difficult to impossible to repair once damage has occurred.
Not only do Chinese have old buildings with which to contend but many towns and villages are rife with corruption, which allows substandard buildings to be erected. Unfortunately, this also happens throughout the world, whether it’s a department store in South Korea or permitless porches in Chicago.
