'My daughter deserved to die for falling in love'
The Guardian (UK) ^

Posted on 05/10/2008 7:07:11 PM PDT by Mount Athos

Two weeks after The Observer revealed the shocking story of Rand Abdel-Qader, 17, murdered because of her infatuation with a British solider in Basra, southern Iraq, her father is defiant. Sitting in the front garden of his well-kept home in the city's Al-Fursi district, he remains a free man, despite having stamped on, suffocated and then stabbed his student daughter to death.

Abdel-Qader, 46, a government employee, was initially arrested but released after two hours. Astonishingly, he said, police congratulated him on what he had done. 'They are men and know what honour is,' he said.

Rand, who was studying English at Basra University, was deemed to have brought shame on her family after becoming infatuated with a British soldier, 22, known only as Paul...

It was her first youthful infatuation and it would be her last. She died on 16 March after her father discovered she had been seen in public talking to Paul, considered to be the enemy, the invader and a Christian. Though her horrified mother, Leila Hussein, called Rand's two brothers, Hassan, 23, and Haydar, 21, to restrain Abdel-Qader as he choked her with his foot on her throat, they joined in. Her shrouded corpse was then tossed into a makeshift grave without ceremony as her uncles spat on it in disgust.

It was her first youthful infatuation and it would be her last. She died on 16 March after her father discovered she had been seen in public talking to Paul, considered to be the enemy, the invader and a Christian. Though her horrified mother, Leila Hussein, called Rand’s two brothers, Hassan, 23, and Haydar, 21, to restrain Abdel-Qader as he choked her with his foot on her throat, they joined in. Her shrouded corpse was then tossed into a makeshift grave without ceremony as her uncles spat on it in disgust.

‘Death was the least she deserved,’ said Abdel-Qader. ‘I don’t regret it. I had the support of all my friends who are fathers, like me, and know what she did was unacceptable to any Muslim that honours his religion,’ he said.

Sitting on a chair by his front door and surrounded by the gerberas and white daisies he had planted in the family garden, Abel-Qader attempted to justify his actions.

‘I don’t have a daughter now, and I prefer to say that I never had one. That girl humiliated me in front of my family and friends. Speaking with a foreign solider, she lost what is the most precious thing for any woman. ‘People from western countries might be shocked, but our girls are not like their daughters that can sleep with any man they want and sometimes even get pregnant without marrying. Our girls should respect their religion, their family and their bodies.

‘I have only two boys from now on. That girl was a mistake in my life. I know God is blessing me for what I did,’ he said, his voice swelling with pride. ‘My sons are by my side, and they were men enough to help me finish the life of someone who just brought shame to ours.’

Abdel-Qader, a Shia, says he was released from the police station ‘because everyone knows that honour killings sometimes are impossible not to commit’. Chillingly, he said: ‘The officers were by my side during all the time I was there, congratulating me on what I had done.’ It’s a statement that, if true, provides an insight into how vast the gulf remains between cultures in Iraq and between the Basra police the British army that trains them.

Both the religion and the culture must be eradicated. If that means burning all the korans and raising and educating all the children ourselves in Western style schools and orphanages, so be it. Something quite similar was done in Japan at the end of WWII to break the traditional militaristic mindset of the country and it seems to have worked really well.

What this scumbag 'deserves' is prolonged torture culminating in the cruelest death that can be imagined. What kind of 'man' can kill an innocent young girl who merely talks to someone in public. Even if there had been anything more between her and the Brit soldier (and it sure sounds like there was nothing but some innocent exchanges of pleasantries) only the most bestial 'religion' imaginable can make such a thing subject to death. Anytime I hear all the "Islam is peace" bleating of fools I think of barbaric practices like this.

EVIL death-cult, EVIL people.
One can no more be infected with Islam and considered ‘good’, than a person can be riddled with cancer and considered ‘healthy’.
If only they would ALL kill each other-one big, death orgy.
The world would be 100% better without a single Muslim alive and I will never change my mind about that.

You know, falling for a British soldier and a Christian man at that was not a bad thing if her father thought about it. Her life would have been much better with a Western man than what she will find in Iraq.

It would have been a good thing for the girl, and ultimately the entire family. The wellbeing of women, and particularly this poor girl, seems to be of the lowest priority.

The truth of the story is probably far different. Odds are good that ol' Abdel-Qader knocked up his daughter and murdered her to hide what he'd done.

The two cops referred to probably know about it and took a bribe.

Just to clarify, it was a response to a comment that if the father thought about it, he would have realized she would have been much better off with the Brit.

The only solution to “honor killings” is to make the punishment so “dishonorable” that it deters the crime.

The entire family should be held up for public scorn as being dishonorable and unclean. Public rituals like dipping each of their right hands in a pot full of pig fat will also help. Even the family name could be given a prefix or suffix to show that they are in shame, and all their official papers changed in that way as well.

Mosques should be encouraged to turn them away, and they might even be forced into moving to an undesirable part of town or living among non-Muslims.

I’ve heard it said that honor killing aren’t practiced much among Iranians, who supposedly look down on it as tribal barbarism, though it’s present in the Kurdish community. The Iranians hang people who commit honor killings. Never thought I’d agree with them about something. I think that the father and the brothers should have pork fat poured down their throats, before being slowly hung.

I remember this National Geographic issue a buncha years back that had this striking girl on the cover. The photographer had snapped it at some kind of refugee camp, but didn't know what a great photo he'd shot until he returned home and developed the films. For years people wondered what happened to her. She was about 12 or 13, had come to the camp with her parents after some conflict in Pakistan or Afganistan or Ghchghchistan, and she disappeared off the map. At least, until NG made an effort to find her. And find her they did: living in a cave, covered in a burkha, looking well older than her years, uneducated, married to a guy who looked...stupid. A mother of a couple of kids.

This woman had no idea the impact her portrait had made. She couldn't believe that she was an international celebrity of sorts. Not like she could do anything about it. NG was glad they found her, discovered her name, yadda yadda, but I couldn't help thinking, "Gee, what a bum deal for this kid. Isn't Islam great?"

Burn it all. Over and done with, and start over. Round up the imams and the mullahs and the psychos and the woman-hating bullies, and do us all a favor and exile them all to an island where they can do all their hating without bothering the rest of us. Blockade the island, and shoot anyone trying to get off. Drop food daily for them, wrapped in pictures of women in bikinis. Or pictures of pigs. Airlift Mecca onto a large barge which will sail in random directions, so the bastards don't know where to aim their fewer-braincells-than-a-dog heads. And then, maybe, we can rebuild the middle east.

**
Caveat: I certainly would not call myself any sort of authority; this is strictly anecdotal.

I have known about 10 Persians, which is what the people are that we call Iranian. Now, true, they were here in the US, so they most probably do not represent a cross-section of the society, but all of them were pro-Western and, though nominally mohammedans, very secular in their outlook. I found them to be absolutely engaging, cosmopolitan, and intelligent.

To be honest,I have read very little about the country, but what I have learned has caused me to conclude the following:

Iran, under the Shah, was doing quite well, although, by all accounts, it was not very democratic. Then the fundamentalists overthrew the Shah, an event which Carter apparently approved of and did nothing to stop and which brought us the Iran Hostage Crisis.

It appears that many inhabitants of Iran, most of whom are young, are not backwards and ignorant like those in most Muslim countries. They are very Western in their ways and pro-West in their attitudes toward world affairs. They are held in check by the repressive muzzie leaders. Perhaps they will be able to bring about an overthrow of the fundamentalists.
