(Rochester, N.Y.) - A 911 dispatcher, Nadire Zelenaj, has been arrested for using computers at work to access secure government Web sites containing information about suspected terrorists.
Now, the FBI wants to know what she did with that sensitive information. Agents would not comment other than to say it's part of a larger investigation.
Zenelaj was hired in 2002 after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Her job enables her to access a secured police data site with criminal information.
However, police allege Zelenaj accessed a terrorist watch list for personal reasons.
A co-worker saw her using the site and became suspicious. Officials tracked her movements between January 2006 and December 2007 and say she visited that site at least 232 times.
Richard Vega of the Office of Public Integrity said that, at present, they can only suspect what she’s been up to.
Zenelaj faces 232 felony counts of computer trespass and one count of official misconduct. She was fired in December.

i guess those “secure gubmint websites” weren’t very secure. i didn’t know that being a 911 operator allowed you access to sensitive data either.

According to information provided by sources exclusive to the Northeast Intelligence Network, ZELENAJ is part of a larger investigation involving at least ten-(10) others, some who are members of a local Islamic Center. Based on a law enforcement source close to the investigation and speaking on the strict condition of anonymity, the information obtained by ZELENAJ was obtained for a “specific purpose,” which was allegedly to "inform and assist area individuals with suspected ties to known terrorists or terrorist organizations.” According to media reports, ZELENAJ accessed the computer databases at least 232 times since 2006, but her activities reportedly span a much longer time period dating back to 2003.

Based on information provided to the Northeast Intelligence Network, other arrests related to ZELENAJ are likely. Investigation is also addressing how much damage to other investigations might have been caused by her unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data.
The law enforcement source confirmed that ZELENAJ “is Muslim with direct and tangential ties to the Muslim community.”

If this report is accurate, she was using the police data bases for 3 years before they discovered her activity. Great.
She's a new hire, of the same religion/ethnicity as the men who had just flown jumbo jets into the World Trade Center in that very same city, and they give her apparently free and unmonitored access to critical info and valuable intel. I have no words.

We are unable to “discriminate” in areas of national security in job hiring. In fact we have shown time and time again a preference for persons of the “victim” class to hold delicate positions. And then we just shrug our shoulders when time and time again the enemy uses our weakness in resolve to plot further attacks.
