I saw this back in the 90’s with some CEO of a company I worked for that hyphenated HIS name to include his wife’s name. I thought he was a pu$$!3 for it.

Since, by their names, I’ll make the assumption that the people in the article aren’t Christian, the traditions may not apply to them.

But, in the Judeo-Christian worldview, the two leave their families to become one flesh, and the man is the head of the family as Christ is the head of the Church.

Your cod-theology notwithstanding, the last name is nothing to do with Christian tradition, it's just a distinguisher to differentiate people with the same baptismal name.

Surname: above the name. It's an epitaph or title added to the name, not part of the name itself.
