Superdelegates say, we will decide
The Hill ^ | 5/06/08 | Alexander Bolton

Posted on 05/07/2008 10:49:34 AM PDT by kingattax

Uncommitted Democratic superdelegates in Congress overwhelmingly say they won’t necessarily back the presidential candidate who wins the most primary delegates. Instead, electability will be very important in their decision.

Of 42 lawmakers interviewed by The Hill, only four said they regarded the primary vote as decisive.

The congressional superdelegates’ independence is precisely what Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) is banking on as she trails by about 130 pledged delegates behind rival Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

It also means the Democratic Caucus is unswayed by its leader, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), who has warned that the party will suffer if superdelegates overturn the will of primary voters. Pelosi has said superdelegates should take into account whatever is important but not give the nomination to the candidate who lags in delegates.

But Pelosi’s troops on Capitol Hill say they are more concerned about electability, plus each candidate’s momentum heading toward the convention, and how their own constituents voted.

Clinton is given little chance of catching Obama’s delegate count in the last few primaries. But her campaign has gained momentum in recent weeks as Obama has been on the defensive over his former pastor and charges of elitism.

Only 10 percent of lawmakers interviewed by The Hill said the delegate count on June 4, the day after the final primaries in Montana and South Dakota, will determine whom they decide to support. There are 70 neutral superdelegates in the House and 22 in the Senate.

“What will be decisive will be two factors: who would make the best president and who has the best chance of winning,” said Rep. Howard Berman (D), an uncommitted lawmaker from Los Angeles.

Neutral Democrats representing districts across the country voiced the same sentiment.

" only four said they regarded the primary vote as decisive. "

Then why bother with a primary at all? This is the stupidest election I can remember.

"So this begs the question: Who is more electable in the GE, Obama or Clinton?"

I saw on CNN this morning...so maybe not real reliable...

They polled Obama supporters and most would vote for Hillary in the GE if she was the nominee.

Same poll of Hillary supporters and the numbers dropped for voting for Obama if he got the nod.

Thus CNN says Hillary is more likely to be able to compete with McCain in the GE.

FWIW...

Sounds a little like a Hillary press release. If she does take the nomination on this basis, though, it will be extremely interesting to watch the demographics in the general election.

I'm still calling it Obama by a nose but I doubt if either staff is sleeping very well.

Clinton is more electable.

After the Wright and Obama’s terrorist buddy, he lost everybody but blacks and white elite liberals.

I figure if they want the White House, put Hillary in and figure for a short time the blacks will be mad.
But after 40+ years of Democrats being the Klan, putting abortion clinics all through black communities to kill their children and failing them like crazy in public education... so what?
Democrats have been pissing on blacks forever, since way before they used to hose them when they tried to desegregate schools.
Blacks feel they have no where else to go and vote than their old masters of the Democrat party, so I guess they should go with Hillary. The blacks will remain on the plantation like good helpers in the end IMO.

80% of the delegates are awarded through the primaries.

The Superdelegates only have the ability to sway the vote in the rare cases where a primary is this close, and even then they are pretty evenly split as well.

The assertion that the Superdelegates control the nomination and that the primaries have no effect isn't really valid.

They can change the course of close race, but the nomination can be won, and usually is won, without the Superdelegates.

You have to understand the mindset of the left.

They have the worldview that people are perfectable (Obama said something about perfecting this nation), and it follows that some are already more perfect than others. These more perfect people have the right and obligation to make decisions for others, because they know better than others.

This is why the superdelegates exist.

WE WILL DECIDE!
with apologies to Gloria Gaynor

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you’re back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you’d be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
‘cause you’re not welcome anymore
weren’t you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I’d crumble
you think I’d lay down and die
Oh no, not I
WE WILL DECIDE!
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I’ve got all my life to live
I’ve got all my love to give
and I’ll survive
WE WILL DECIDE!

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I’m not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I’m saving all my loving
for someone who’s loving me

I appreciate your FWIW. It seems to me Hillary would have to promise immediate troop withdrawals to have any hope of keeping Obama's youth contingent from sitting the election out. As to the Black voters, without Obama, neither Hillary or certainly not McCain will benefit. In fact, I could see some violence if the nomination is "stolen".

Well, she gave him his orders
at Monroe, Virginia,
Sayin’, “Bill, you’re a-way behind time.
This is not Huma, but it’s old Bill Clinton
You must put her into Spencer on time.”

Well, she turned around and she said
to her tired, sleezy husband
“Shovel on a little more coal,
And when we cross that White Oak Mountain
You can watch Old Hillary roll.”

It’s a mighty rough road
from Lynchburg to Danville
A line on a three-mile grade
It was on that grade
that she lost her average
You can see what a jump she made

She was goin’ down the grade
making 90 miles an hour
Her whistle broke into a cackle
They found her in the wreck
with her hand on the throttle
She was scalded to death by Osama-Obama

Now ladies, you must all take a warning
From this time now and learn
Never speak false words to your true lovin’ voters
They may leave you and never return.

There is way too much obsession on FR about the factions of the Democrats.

Factions of Democrats do not win elections. Factions of Republicans do not win elections.

The Independent Moderates win elections. Independent maverick McCain is MUCH closer to the political center, and has a reputation as such, than Obama. McCain is not all that much closer to the political center by reputation than Hillary can be painted to be.

It is for this reason that Obama is the preferred nominee for the leftists, and for FR. The center wins elections. You want the least conservative choice (the more liberal, aka Obama) to be farther from the center than the less liberal, aka, more conservative) choice — which is McCain.

Who knows what they will do at the Convention. I know today there was a story of an interview with a S elegate who said clearly that the criteria to assign SD votes is NOT limited to who has the lead going into the Convention, He said the question of who had the better chance of winning would weigh heavily in their decision making.

In any case the campaign goes on and the longer it goes on the better for us.

Exactly right and that's what makes this all so devastating for the Democrats. What amazes me is that there are many here who cannot seem to see this damage and actually believe it will magically disappear as soon as a nominee is decided.
