Clinton's derby pick put down
Herald Sun ^ | 5 May 2008

THE only filly in the legendary US Kentucky Derby, which Hillary Clinton urged her supporters to put their money on, broke both its ankles and was destroyed on the track after the race ended.

Senator Clinton will be hoping Saturday's derby does not prove to be a political omen.

Runner-up Eight Belles, whom Senator Clinton had urged supporters to put their money on as the sole female runner was humanely destroyed on the track minutes after the race ended.

Barack Obama, Clinton's African-American rival for the Democratic White House nomination, may draw comfort from both the winning thoroughbred's name and its comparative lack of experience.

After B Hussein Obama wins the dim nomination, I volunteer to put her thighness out of her misery! :)

I won't ''give you that crap''.

I will, however, say in the strongest terms that a horse who runs (ran) that well in a major stakes race, who must be put down immediately after the race is a tragic figure, man or horse.

Imagine, if you would, your reaction to a runner in the 800 metres race in the Olympics breaking an ankle so badly, compound fracture no doubt, that his system is poisoned, presumably from infection as he continues to run on the broken ankle, and dies very shortly after the race.

This is simply tragedy, in either the actual case at Churchill Downs, or in the hypothetical case above.

BTW, the 'hypothetical' case above is not historically so hypothetical at all. You may recall a chap named Pheidippedes from Greek history.

At least we won’t be subject to a year of Barbaro threads. I have nothing against horses, aside from the fact that I would not date or marry a woman who has or wants to have horses. They take too much time and if she wants something to “ride”, I have a better option for a wife to ride.

And you are right, it is just a horse. I didn’t watch the race and also have no interest in seeing the video of the horse going down or being euthanized.

Not really, but horses are like dogs...really, really expensive dogs with investors in many cases. There's the affection for a beloved performing pet and a terrible loss of an asset. Two different ends of the spectrum in sentiment, assuredly, but large concerns at both ends.

There's a huge amount of investment in emotion and dollars to raise a horse and train him for this sport. It's simply crushing to have it end this way.

No way does a horse equal a man, but there is way more emotional investment in a horse than the average livestock.

You know, I hate to make this prophetic analogy, however, the only female in the race, Eight Belles comes in second (like Hillary will?), and Big Brown wins (like Obama, who is neither black nor white, but appears brown?). Weird, if you ask me.

"I was hoping people wouldn’t joke about this."

You and I are of the same mind about this. The scenerio involving this horse was very sad and I find it hard to be cavalier about any part of it.

No, horses are people. But they are God's creatures, and the way this happened was just tragic.

No, it isn't a big deal, but it's sad that it's being used to take shots at Hillary. Not fair to the horse.

And I'm talking about the horse, I wasn't taking a shot at anyone.

I'm not sure exactly how it's unfair to the horse, but I agree that the loss of a horse under such conditions is a sad event. Certainly not on par with the loss of a human, but it's still a sad and gruesome sight to witness. Not only are they magnificent animals, but there's the aspect of the loss of an investment, not to mention that the trainers and handlers of these aminmals tend to become attached to them.

Having said all of that, I would have to be at room temperature to not recognize and enjoy the irony involved in Hitlery's attempt to reap some political capital from this event.

Come on folks, this story is old.

Lets stop beating this dead horse.

[Insert rim shot here]

Maybe after the Dem convention, they’ll be putting the “tent” around Hillery and calling for the Doc.

I have been in the horse business for over 50 years, starting with Thoroughbreds in dressage and ending with Saddlebreds in the show arena.

Eight Belles was only a little over two and half years old, that is way too young for a horse to race! Their bones are not yet developed and set as yet. There are way too many of them that meet their end way too soon, because they are raced too early in life. They have a desire to run, but need the time to develop strength before going into competition. They stress their bones beyond the point of no return. I worked one summer at a rehab for race horses in Ocala Florida, and some of the wreckage is just heartbreaking.

A long time ago I had a friend who was a Native American, he told me an adage that went straight to my heart- He said " The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man:. May Belle rest in peace!
