Someone is going to be in big, big trouble over this. I'll bet you a burger that those were handgun shots that killed these animals, and that someone came up close in a boat to do this killing. The traps are too far from the bank for anyone other than a trained sniper to get a killing shot, much less six...
Bad juju here, and there is some local out there who is about to have the Federal Gubment crawling all over him...

We need to spend 10 or maybe 15 billion dollars on this problem. Are the seals stressed? We just do not know. I can take control of this obvious crisis. I need 125.5 million dollars to set up my research center. There was a great thread on bad beer so I really want to see the effects of drunk guys on fish and/or mammals. I will need a brewery and the swedish bikini team to make sure we have drunk guys. Hmm..I really don’t need you guys.

Both species of sea lion are federally protected...Federal protection doesn't amount to much, does it.

Trained sniper? huh, how far are they from shore. Unless they are 500-600 yards most anyone could make the shot.
To: Bean Counter
Obviously we need more gun control.

Better they shot the Sea Lions than the idiots that made them protected species.

As a person who has seen the Sea Lion problem, and there is a problem, up close I would say this was done by someone highly pi**** off about sea lions. They are obnoxious animals, in Fort Bragg, California they will attack people who come onto the docks. They lay around terrorizing people and eat the he** out of what fish there are. People who live around them are not to fond of them for the most part.
People are getting tired of animals who are not endangered being on the list, and now they want to add Polar Bears, who are in no danger what so ever of becoming extinct any time soon.
Some people think it is time to think of people welfare a little more and to stop worrying about animal welfare a little less.

Many 'armature target shooters' are more capable than 'trained snipers'.
Exactly how far out were they?

Ummm? Where to start...
Well, first off, just downstream of the dam the river narrows down to about 250-350 meters from bank to bank. That’s where the traps were likely placed, around one of the river’s bottlenecks. That’s not “trained sniper” country there, that’s something a drunk bubba with a deer rifle can manage.
Furthermore, shooting at something that’s floating out in the river is pretty damned easy. If you miss, you’ll see a nice plume of water at your point of impact. Shift your point of aim, and there ya go.
What’s more, what makes you think that it would take a ‘trained sniper’ to make those shots rather than, say, some fellow who spends the weekends plunking groundhogs? ;)
Long-range shooting isn’t quite as esoteric as many people think it is.

Good. Kill about 1000 more, pronto.

Question for those who know...
Why are Sea Lions a Federally protected species? I wasn't aware they are threatened with extinction?
