Cheney to appear in 'get out the vote' rally at the Desoto Civic Center
SOUTHAVEN - White House officials confirmed Friday that U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney will make a campaign stop on behalf of 1st U.S. Congressional candidate Greg Davis May 12, the eve of the run-off election with Democrat Travis Childers.
"We can confirm the vice president will be attending a get out the vote rally for Greg Davis," Jamie Breland, spokesperson in the White House Press Office of Vice President Dick Cheney, said Friday.
Tentative arrangements call for Cheney to appear with Davis in an afternoon rally at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Republican strategist Karl Rove will also appear with Davis in a separate event prior to the election.
Tickets to the event will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Davis said he was honored and gratified by the Cheney visit, the first by a sitting vice president on behalf of a Congressional candidate from DeSoto County.
"We're very excited about it," Davis said. "It shows the importance of the race, and the importance of getting people to the polls."
Davis and Childers are locked in a heated race for the U.S. Representative seat left vacant by former U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker. Wicker was tapped by Gov. Haley Barbour to fill the seat of Trent Lott who retired in December as Mississippi's senior senator after 35 years in Congress.
The May 13 election will be the fourth successive election in nine weeks for the post.
Cheney's visit will cap a series of visits by officials in the Bush Administration to DeSoto County, believed to be the only time in recent history in which a Mississippi city has hosted a sitting president, first lady and vice president from the same administration.
President George W. Bush visited DeSoto County in November 2003 in a rally for the election of Gov. Haley Barbour.
First Lady Laura Bush visited Hurricane Katrina victims who relocated to Southaven and other parts of DeSoto County in 2005.
Former First Lady Barbara Bush made a visit to Southaven City Hall to campaign on behalf of her presidential candidate son in 2000.

Given the unpopularity of the Bush Administration, this might not be such a good idea.
Kerry only won Marshall County heavily, and Benton and Clay Counties narrowly, and he narrowly lost Panola and Chickasaw counties. Marshall and Clay Counties have narrow black majorities. Panola and Chickasaw Counties are over 40% black. Benton County is 36% black and had a significant white vote go democrat by Mississippi standards. Marshall County had some white democrat vote as well. The rest were fairly solid Republican areas, with DeSoto (near Memphis) being the best area for the GOP. Tupelo is key as well.
Throw the rules out in special elections however. If Childers can get those 47%+ Kerry areas to the polls and the black turnout (26% of the population), he can certainly win.
Don't accept the garbage from the MSM. His 'approval' numbers may be in the 40's, but he's still a very popular President, personally. I think his personal approval numbers are into the 60's, with popularity among Republicans very high, the nay-sayers on FR notwithstanding.
Should Cheney be campaigning in the 6th CD instead if not both the 1st and 6th, since the 6th is the CD most likely to go Democratic?

I may be disappointed in Bush, but I love having a VP who cusses out ‘Rat Senators, shoots folks, and has a nekkid woman’s reflection in his sunglasses.

This will reduce the GOP numbers to 199, or is it 198? I don’t think there is any question that the Democrat will prevail, as the district is historically Democrat: J. Whitten. That’s why Wicker should have stayed put, and a new person with imagination who thinks outside the box should have been named to the Senate seat.
