Some days it is like waking up in alternate universe.

“Some could argue the same about being hit by a paintball without protective gear, where a projectile from a paintball gun leaves a small welt on the flesh.”

I have found that frozen paint balls leave a larger welt.

“Small welt or not, human rights activists say it is a bad idea, even for a line of defense.”

Yes it is a bad idea, never bring a paintballer to a gun fight.

This is a poorly written and researched article. The Border Patrol has been using pepperball launchers for about seven years now. They are an effective tool. Unfortunately, the policy that governs it’s use by agents makes it less effective.

You can get the solid rubber balls for paintball guns. That will sting them good.

Sad but true, I volunteer weekly at the local county jail where they have more ammenities than I do at home...

“You can get a lot of stuff into a 10 gauge shell.”

IIRC, Ithaca once made a 10 gauge autoloading shottie. That would make possible multiple handsful of “projectiles” downrange.

However, a Saiga 12 with a drum, or a few magazines, would be a far better choice.

12 gauge 3” is close to the 10 gauge, close enough for close range urban situations, at least.

We are hardly dealing with honkers at 80 yards - just “stoners” at 30 yards.
