24 April 2008

A MAN who battered a bus driver with a wooden mallet when he was asked to pay his fare, was jailed on Thursday.

Erjon Demuqaj, 19, launched a ferocious attack and rained down blows on Amandeep Virdee after refusing to pay for a ticket in London Road, Barking.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how Mr Virdee, 30, was gashed on his hand and had a thumbnail ripped off as he tried to shield himself from the raging thug.

When police arrived, Demuqaj, who fled war-torn Kosovo 10 years ago as a child refugee, blamed the bus driver, saying he "asked for it".

Elizabeth Schofield, defending, said Demuqaj, of St Margaret's, Barking, was studying carpentry at college and cared for his mother who had been diagnosed with "some sort of post-traumatic stress disorder".

Demuqaj pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and battery.

Judge John Lafferty sentenced him to one year in a young offenders' institution and said: "You boarded a number 366 bus with absolutely no intention of paying your fare.

"When challenged by the driver, who is a public servant, you immediately launched into a verbal assault in the vilest of terms.

"You didn't stop at that.

"Once you saw that the driver was not going to allow you to board the bus you attempted to punch him.

"You sprayed a can of Red Bull at him, you swung your bag at him.

"When you ran away from him, you didn't attempt to make your escape, you sought a weapon and returned with a weapon.

One of those “poor, innocent” refugee children that people cried over years ago has grown up.

[I wonder which of the world’s major religions he claims as his own...]

Just a guess - its second syllable rhymes with “ham”?

Sounds like it wasn’t a fare fight at all.

The moral, perhaps, is to never bring a bus to a mallet fight?

If he can afford a $2/can energy drink (Red Bull), he can afford bus fare.

Sounds like a typical Democrat. Note how the MSM always leaves off the party affiliation when the perp is a Democrat.

Yes, I know that this is the UK and not the US, and that Demuqaj is not an elected official. Do I really need a sarcasm tag? Or would that be an "absurdity" tag?
