No, it is not illegal. Two people may stand in front of a pastor and make their vows to each other without having to get a marriage license. I doubt very seriously if the Amish bother to go to the courthouse and get a marriage license.

So you are saying that Amish weddings are not recognized by the states?

Is the issue that of under age girls having babies or is it about the age of the fathers?

The almighty “State” in some locations will take a pregnant, underage, unmarried girl for an abortion without her parent's permission.

Now the State has taken 400 children from their parents.

Does the State allege that all 400 are “victims”.

Is a 50 year old father that stays with and supports his family a monster while an 18 year old male who has multiple children by multiple “partners” just someone “doin’ his thang’”?

Forced marriage of girls to anyone, especially “old men” is abhorrent. However, many on this forum need to take a deep breath and wait until this investigation is finished.

Concurrent polygamy is wrong and unacceptable in our society. Conversly, serial polygamy (with or without marriage commitment) is widely practiced and generally accepted in our society, but also wrong. (yeah, I remember the hippie chant from the 60’s, “don't force your tired old morality on me.”)

IIRC there was quite a stir several years ago about a North Carolina daycare. Lots of righteous indignation, cries of “burn the witches”, etc. Once the dust settled, the State dropped the charges (after convictions and jail time for the accused).

So? They didn’t try to get the state to recognize the marriages. It isn’t illegal to hold a private wedding ceremony without the blessings of the state. And any man who has more than one wife deserves everything he gets.

Do you actually know that it isn't illegal or are you just guessing?

The ranch was only purchased in 2004 and it was a while before people knew that it was anything but a corporate hunting retreat. Which is what the cult’s representative said it was going to be when he bought it. It hasn’t been decades. Just under 4 years from the time of purchase. It was some time before the locals even realized that polygamists were on the land.

I can assure you that in my good state of Missouri that it is a crime for a minister to solemnize marriage vows without a state license. I imagine most states are the same.

If the father routinely takes teenagers as sexual partners, it matters not that he is bringing home the bacon. He is a predator. Heck, if he does it once, I'd say he qualifies as a predator.

If you wanna read an interesting book, try "Under the Banner of Heaven."

The Colorado calls had NOTHING to do with the original warrant.

Time to eat those words. The warrant affidavit just unsealed says otherwise!

Two prepaid mobile phones that were used to make calls late last month to a domestic violence shelter in San Angelo had previously been used by Rozita Swinton in calls to abuse hot lines and authorities in Colorado and Washington, the affidavit said.
and
One phone number used to call the San Angelo shelter is registered to a Courtney Swinton, with an address in Rozita Swinton's apartment complex. The affidavit said authorities had "several reports regarding Rozita Swinton making false reports" with another number that had also been used to call the shelter.
Of course, I don't see what the big fuss is, and why they need affidavits to get a warrant to arrest her--we all know she did it, so let's just get her! </sarc>

Politicalmom and Wolfcreek, would you like to revise and/or extend your comments on what's 'unlawful' and how the kids had no rights because they weren't adults?

Are you taunting us? That would be against the rules.

One court decision does not decide this issue.

IMO, no matter what the reasoning, the state of Texas had every reason to get those kids out of that situation.

No, they didn't. The state has to show evidence that the children were in IMMEDIATE DANGER and all we have is the OPINION of the lead investigator who didn't like the way he THOUGHT the children were being raised. It certainly is not fact at all.

From what I have read, they mind their own business, pay their taxes and don’t bother other people. Yes, they would be terrible neighbors.

If you were having sex with underaged girls, you wouldn’t bother others either.

Young Girl

Young Girl, get out of my mind,
my love for you is way out of line.
Better run, girl,
you’re much too young, girl.

With all the charms of a woman,
You’ve kept the secret of your youth.
You led me to believe you’re old enough to give me love
and now it hurts to know the truth. Oh, Oh,

chorus
Beneath your perfume and make-up,br> You’re just a baby in disquise
And though you know that it’s wrong to be alone with me,
that come on look is in your eyes. Oh, Oh,

chorus
So hurry home to your mama
I’m sure she wonders where you are.
Get out of here before I have the time to change my mind
‘cause I’m afraid we’ll go too far
