U.S. Diplomats warned of compulsory Iraq duty

Similar State Department call-up last year sparked revolt among officers

The State Department warned U.S. diplomats they may be forced to serve in Iraq next year and said it will soon start identifying prime candidates for jobs at the Baghdad embassy and outlying provinces, according to a cable obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

A similar call-up threat last year caused a revolt among foreign service officers who objected to compulsory work in a war zone, although in the end the State Department found enough volunteers to fill the jobs.

Now, the State Department anticipates another staffing crisis.

"We face a growing challenge of supply and demand in the 2009 staffing cycle," the cable said, noting that more than 20 percent of the nearly 12,000 foreign service officers have already worked in the two major hardship posts — Iraq and Afghanistan — and a growing number have done tours in both countries.

As a result, the unclassified April 8 cable said, "the prime candidate exercise will be repeated" next year, meaning the State Department will begin identifying U.S. diplomats qualified to serve in Iraq and who could be forced to work there if they don't volunteer.

Looking for special abilities

The prime candidate list will be composed of diplomats who have special abilities that are needed in Iraq, such as Arabic language skills, deep Mideast knowledge or training in specific areas of reconstruction.

"We must assign to Iraq those employees whose skills are most needed, and those employees should know that they personally are needed," Foreign Service Director General Harry Thomas said in the cable sent to all diplomatic missions.

Any Foggy Bottoms who refuse orders should be fired, and replaced one for one by military officers injured in the line of duty.

I think this is cruel and unfair.

They should also be given the option of serving in Afghanistan, as well.

They should quit giving them advance notice anyway. Just pick and post. Anyone not liking it can quit.

With all of the chair occupiers and check cashers at State, it is very nice to see someone like Ryan Crocker emerge from all of that dreck.

Why...you Philistine, you!

Have you no appreciation for the finer arts of diplomacy? I-I mean...they wouldn't even know with which fork they should eat. Why...they probably wouldn't even be able to speak French...they're utter heathens!

Sounds like fun!!! Besides it sure would go a long way towards cleaning up that mare's nest of anti-American pacifists.

You've got my vote:D

Like my new tag-line?

“pu$$ies”

Especially in light of the fact that the French did it during WW-I, only for real. The French head of state trucked this entire government to Verdun, and set up shop in dugouts right behind the trenches. If the Germans had gotten a mile farther it was going to be their a$$es.

According to John Bolton, Condi is Hell on wheels.

In his book "Surrender Is Not An Option" he describes her as one tough bird constantly at war with the foppish idiots who infest our State Department.

I think we all understand the problem with State now. To many ninnies counting beans. If you don't like your assignment, resign.

Local provinces in Iraq have actually indicated an interest in contracting with certain elements of the US government to pay US for continuing reconstruction. The problem is that the agreements require State Department approval. Those sometimes aren't easy to get. So in spite of the Dems complaints to the contrary Iraq is attempting to step forward and fund the reconstruction.

State Department needs to cr#p or get off the pot.

Would of been nice if Codi raised heck her first day on at State. Five years later seems a little late. She should go back to academia where such snail pace, ineffective behavior is the norm.

Read Bolton's book, you will find that Condi has been, for the most part, one very tough cookie.

Powell was the real wuss.

Effectiveness, zero.

Real world, you are fired. Next.
