"THERE ARE NO TRANSITIONAL FOS-oh wait, nevermind." So tell me....how can we be certain from one of these fossils that these are vestigial limbs that have almost disappeared, and not budding limbs that are just starting to grow?

So tell me....how can we be certain from one of these fossils that these are vestigial limbs that have almost disappeared, and not budding limbs that are just starting to grow? One would simply look at similar specimens in the fossil record that are older and younger and see if there is a trend.

By the condition of the fossil bones. Mature bones look different from adolescent bones.
By the way, some snakes - boas for one, have a vestigal outer limb in the form of a small surface spur used by the males to stimulate the females during courtship.
