At least 3 dead in gunbattle in Mexican border state

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — At least three people were killed and three more wounded in a highway gunbattle in northern Mexico, officials said Sunday.

The shootout took place Saturday in the southern part of the border state of Chihuahua, said Rene Medrano, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office. Authorities believe the battle was between rival drug gangs.

Mexico City newspaper El Universal reported that 14 people died in the violence.

Last month, the government sent more than 2,500 soldiers and federal police to crack down on soaring violence in Chihuahua.

About 200 people have been killed this year in Ciudad Juarez, a Chihuahua city of 1.3 million across the border from El Paso, Texas.

On Friday, U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza said the United States could issue a heightened travel alert in the coming week "to better reflect the increasing insecurity in the state of Chihuahua."

I am sure that these fine folks maintain totally high standards of trucking and will drive perfectly safe on US highways, carrying 100% legal cargos.

"Truck papers and safety inspection? We don gots to show you no stinking truck papers and safety inspection."

It gives me the warm fuzzies knowing the Jorge Bush Administration is seriously planning to build the virtual fence.
