A pro-life group in Texas is drawing attention to the Abortion Breast Cancer link and Planned Parenthood's relationship with the Susan G. Komen Foundation with a new billboard that raises serious questions -- and is drawing fire.
Pro-Life Waco has set up a billboard on the 1700 block of Franklin Avenue that poses suggestive questions: "What? An abortion increases my risk for breast cancer? Why does the Komen Race grant $45,000 to Waco's Planned Parenthood abortion provider?"
The billboard also shows a concerned woman and has a pink background –- a color now associated with the breast cancer awareness campaigns largely backed by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which conducts its annual Race for the Cure on May 3 this year.
The billboard is also visible from the offices of the Waco Tribune-Herald, which has voiced support of Planned Parenthood's policies and agenda in the past.
An editorial in the March 23, 2008 edition of the paper called the billboard's claims "false" and "specious."
But John Pisciotta, Co-Director of Pro-Life Waco, tells LifeNews.com the Waco paper is off base.
"Another Tribune editorial on Monday the 24th of March urged Planned Parenthood style sex (promiscuity) education to counter the nation's STD epidemic affecting a quarter of American teen girls and half of African-American teens," he said. "The editorials reveal that the Trib editorial board is closely aligned with 'Planned Promiscuity' of Waco."
"Let's continue to challenge the unholy alliance between the Central Texas Race for the Cure and Waco's Planned Parenthood abortion provider," added Pisciotta. "Planned Parenthood extinguishes the lives of about 1,200 unborn babies in Waco every year."
Karen Malec, president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, has previously explained to LifeNews.com how cancer organizations are suppressing information about the abortion-breast cancer link and using data from studies that used questionable methods.
One such study used by groups that want to downplay the ABC link is the 2004 Lancet study that has been criticized for its errors in at least five medical journals.
In the 2004 Lancet study, scientists used unscientific reasons (i.e., they couldn't locate original authors of some studies) to toss out 15 published, peer-reviewed studies reporting an average 80% breast cancer risk elevation after abortion.
"Then they added 28 never-published, never-peer-reviewed studies to their review. The unpublished studies represented most of the research included in the supposed review," Malec said.
It's not just the pro-life sources that are accusing the medical establishment of covering up the abortion-breast cancer link.
Allegations are being made in medical journals, Malec explained. She highlighted an article written in the March 2008 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons by Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, a New Jersey-based breast cancer expert.
Lanfranchi, a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, said they are "participating in the suppression of information about the heightened risk of breast cancer posed by oral contraceptives and induced abortion."
In October 2007, Patrick Carroll, Director of Research at Britain's Pension and Population Research Institute, published a new study, "Assessing the Damage," which found that rates of breast cancer in England have risen by 80% since the late seventies – not long after England had legalized abortion in 1967.
In 1996, Dr. Joel Brind of Baruch College and other researchers conducted a synthesis of all the major studies done in the field to that time.
They concluded that women who had an abortion before their first term child had a 50% increased risk of developing breast cancer while women who had an abortion after their first child sustained a 30% increased risk.
