The Republican Party was started in 1854...about 200 years after slavery was legally established in the British colonies on the North American mainland, and about 350 years after the Spanish began bringing Africans to the New World as slaves.
The KKK was originally founded to oppose the Republican Party in the South, and targeted Republicans of both races in order to restore Democratic control in the South.
