Any constitutional lawyers want to explain how making schoolkids swear loyalty to the United States violates the First Amendment but not making adult voters swear loyalty to their new party?
The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections has launched an investigation that could lead to criminal charges against voters who maliciously switched parties for the March 4 presidential primary.
Elections workers will look for evidence that voters lied when they signed affidavits pledging allegiance to their new party
After the election, some local Republicans admitted they changed parties only to influence which Democrat would face presumed Republican nominee John McCain in November. One voter scribbled the following addendum to his pledge as a new Democrat: For one day only.
Such an admission amounts to voter fraud, said [board member Sandy] McNair, who pushed for the investigation
Lying on the signed statement is a fifth-degree felony, punishable by six to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Heres the statute, although the mechanics are convoluted so youre better off reading Wireds analysis. Essentially, youre only in trouble if you perjure yourself by signing an affidavit affirming your new loyalty but the affidavits are supposed to be demanded as a matter of course and if you refuse to sign you only get a provisional ballot. Exit question: Should we expect any bipartisan outrage over this like we saw when the Virginia GOP toyed with the idea of a loyalty oath for their own primary? Or are we playing by Obama rules here, where ordinary political sins are absolved if it benefits the left to do so?

Geez-O-Pete! Then do we get to string up all the Dems who do this in (R) primaries, and helped give us Airbus McCain?
Liberals on a rant. Feel froggy, go ahead and leap.
Simple enough. Just say that you had a conversion experience and became a Democrat, but then had another conversion experience and became a Republican again.
How can anyone disprove that?
The libs at work have their knickers in a twist about “Operation Chaos”. Not too funny when your own dog bites you in the a$$.
No problem. All the person being prosecuted for perjuriously swearing has to do is ask what principles the Rat party stands for. What principles DO they stand for?
Case dismissed.
I support the Democratic Party of Grover Cleveland. If the Republicans put up some goofball like Benjamin Harrison, I’ll keep voting for Cleveland.
This is really stupid.
Sorry. You can change your mind and your affiliation if you want and no one has the right to say otherwise.
This is just some scare tactic they are trying to use to influence the voters in other state primaries.
Suppressing the vote; how Stalinist, how interesting, however, I’m waiting for the first indictment. This could be real special.
I don’t think that the democrats really want to open the can of worms called “voter fraud”.
Their first arrest will have to be Obama. I believe I heard, on Rush, that Obama’s Camp has been making phone calls urging Republicans to cross over for him after Rush’s Operation Chaos pumped new life into HRC’s campaign.
What a waste of time and money. Did they give them walking around money or cigarettes when they “registered”?
Pray for W and Our Troops
agree !
Ain’t gonna happen.
“Jerry, just remember it’s not really a lie if you believe it”-another “costanzaism” to live by.
have them all plead not-guilty and ask for a court appointed lawyer?
It’s voter intimidation by the Ohio state election officials. Isn’t that a crime?
