WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. aircraft carriers, including the USS Kitty Hawk, have been sent to the Taiwan region for training exercises during this weekend's Taiwanese election, a U.S. defense official said on Wednesday.
The two warships were "responsibly positioned" in the Pacific Ocean somewhere east of Taiwan and would remain in place through Saturday's presidential election and referendum on U.N. membership, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
He declined to elaborate on the positions of the two ships and could identify only the Kitty Hawk by name.

"Err...Not to be rude, but just what is up with the 7th Fleet Area of Operations? The whole world wonders....
Over the past couple of days we've seen evidence that auxiliaries are being overwhelmed by "short-notice operational taskings" in the region, and with the Essex ESG cruising with the rather powerful USS Nimitz strike group, coupled with a new report that the USS Kitty Hawk just high-tailed it out of Yokosuka, we've pretty much got the entire 7th Fleet out at sea.
And then Abe, headed for Pearl Harbor on the 21st, serving as reserve...
This amount of movement just seems unusual. Sure looks like we're worried about Taiwan, though. And nobody's covering it."
Taiwan and Tibet are probably going to UNITE.
“...And nobody’s covering it.”
Ohhh - we’re covering it. :)
This happens evey time there’s an election.
Bttt.
There is no way China is going to do anything this close to the Olympics. China has been desperate to present a showcase to the world, and the Olympics 2008 gives it that chance (much like Munich in 1936). China is eager for a PR coup, so it will not “squirrel” things across the Tawiwan Straits. At least, not before the Olympics.
Errr, I meant Berlin, 1936.
Well Munich was in 1972 I believe but either way, that one didnt go very well either with those Homicidal maniacs killing the Israeli athletes.
The Chinese Premier sure was itchy about Taiwan last night on C-SPAN. He said whoever sought to divide Taiwan from the One China was doomed to failure.
