This is Belgian cyclist Kevin van Impe. His wife gave birth prematurely this year, and their son died hours after he was born.
Last week van Impe was at a crematorium, making arrangements for his son's funeral, when a drug tester representing cycling's governing body showed up. Van Impe asked whether the tester would be kind enough to give him some space during his grieving process, but the tester would have none of it, telling him it was provide a urine sample immediately or be banned from the sport for two years:
"He wouldn't even come back later in the day. It was either do it right on the spot or it would be taken as if I had refused," van Impe said.

This is beyond absurd- it’s obscene. Forcing a man to provide a urine sample at his infant son’s funeral has no justification.
You’re right. That is sickening. It’s good to see other cyclists are backing him up.
I would’ve punched the POS, hopefully knocking him out, then gone to America to race. That is, if I was in the guy’s shoes.
If I were he?
“The only sample I’ll be giving today is a DNA sample after they arrest me for murdering a particular, self-important, ass.”
I like your style. Even better: the drug testing fascist should have been cremated as well.
Cheers!
My response would have been to whip it out and urinate on the testdroid, right on the spot.
May be of interest.
“Drug War”? What a stupid title. Cycling has a “drug war”? Give me a break.
Bureaucrats don’t think for themselves or allow their conscience to effect them, they just do their thing.
I would sue the governing board for harassment or some darned thing. This is blatantly wrong and the tester should be fired and sued as well.
Hell, even my wife would have kicked this unreasonable morons butt.
This is the way that the anti-doping types behave. One anti-doping inspector demanded a sample from a cyclist when he was about to drive his wife to the hospital when she was about to give birth. These imperious buttwipes will even barge into a cyclist’s place of employment to demand a sample.
I know a few cyclists who are subject to this kind of testing who are also employed at some defense related places. I would like to see some of these inspectors try crashing their way into those locations - if they are lucky to survive they would have some explaining for the Feds.
“This is the way that the anti-doping types behave”
True. Beauracrats in general are like that.
