John McCain's Full Hour on "Hannity & Colmes"(Transcript)
realclearpolitics.com ^ | March 14, 2008 | Sean Hannity interview w/ Sen. John McCain

Posted on 03/14/2008 6:25:42 AM PDT by kellynla

SEAN HANNITY, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: And welcome to this special program. We have Senator John McCain for the full hour tonight.

Senator, how are you?

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R-AZ), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Good.

HANNITY: Good to see you.

MCCAIN: Thank you. Thanks for having me on.

HANNITY: Well, we really appreciate it, especially all the time you're going to be giving us here.

Let me start -- tomorrow is the 35th anniversary of your return from Vietnam. And I went back and I looked. You were held for five and a half years of your life, tortured, beaten.

Take us back to that night when you ended up.

MCCAIN: Well, it was a little bit anticlimactic because we knew that we were going home, but it was still an exciting moment. You know, one of the bad things about that war is that you never knew when it was going to end, although when the B-52s came over at Christmas-time -- it's all long- ago history now, but we knew that we were going home now, when the full power of America was unleashed.

I was very excited, very happy. And it was -- it was a moment obviously that I'll never forget.

HANNITY: When you were captured, you had broken your two arms. You had shattered your knee, you broke your shoulder. And then when they captured you, they had beaten you, I read, and stabbed you with a bayonet.

“MCCAIN: Yes. We said we’d give amnesty and secure the borders. We didn’t secure the borders. We ended up with 12 million or more people here illegally. So there’s no trust there.”

“So you’ve got to prove to the American people that your borders are secure. Then you move to temper-proof biometric documents for temporary workers.”

“And any employer who hires someone without that, and an employer electronic verification system, then is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I mean, and then we address the issue in a humane and compassionate fashion. They are God’s children, and we can be humane and compassionate about this.”

McCain is STILL pretending to be freeking clueless. Promises ONLY to secure our borders FIRST....and THEN he will “humanely and compassionately” reward illegal aliens AND their employers with amnesty. I’m sick to death of these politicians double speak. McShamnesty will never get my vote.

Why do nations connected to the US land mass get dibs on our slave labor? We would probably have to pay the some Asians and Africans alot less.

Clearly you did not read that passage very carefully. He was referring to the immigration reform package President Reagan passed in 1986.

Then he talks about a system for guest workers with an identification system to keep employers from hiring illegals.

McCain has been weak on immigration up to this point, but he has a lot of company, including the current occupant of the White House and even President Reagan.

If you think that Hillary Rodham Clinton or Buraq Hussein Obama would be better for border security and immigration policy, by all means take careful aim and shoot yourself in the foot and refuse to vote for McCain, who happens to be more focused on the war against radical Islam than even President Bush.

So we win the distant war, only to lose the battle here at home?

and THEN he will “humanely and compassionately” reward illegal aliens AND their employers with amnesty.

Thing is, amnesty won't benefit their employers. The attraction of illegals is obviously cheap labor, and once they become citizens they cease to be cheap.

There really is little reason for McCain or other GOP officials to go on Fox for interviews of this sort. In the end it will prove nothing, simply because of the obvious soft glove approach that this network always uses with our side. You can always count on the elimination of any difficult or uncomfortable questions in these little fluff sessions.

As a matter of fact, I did read it and was aware he was referring to Reagan.

I’ve been involved with this issue for a long time...long enough to recognize that ‘compassion’ and ‘humanely’ are among a lengthly list of code words for AMNESTY.

I support the identification system to keep employers from hiring illegals NOW, not AFTER the current employers and illegals have been awarded amnesty and are no longer held accountable.

McCain is STILL weak on immigration and yes, he is to be held just as accountable as Bush and Reagan. Frankly, no, I don’t think the Dems will be any better for border security or immigration, but I DO think that we (most of us) will unite to defeat such madness when it is being pushed by a Dem rather than a RHINO. With McCain, we will have more of the same, no unity, with the party split definitively between conservatives and pro-illegals/amnesty RHINOs.

Thanks for posting this, kelly. Here's one of my BIG problems with McCain: he's too genteel when discussing his differences with Obama or Hillary, but he's all too willing to tell allies like John Cornyn "F--- You!!!!"

I'm mad at Dubya, too. Had we started construction on oil rigs in ANWR on 9/12/2001, we'd be at most 3 years away from increasing domestic oil production.

Since Reagan, we have yet to field a candidate that knows the awesome power of the "bully pulpit" of the Presidency.

Would that some of the anonymous naysayers and keyboard warriors on this site have contributed even a modicum of the national service to this nation that McCain has given.

Sounds like McCain is finally in favor of the SAVE Act. Will he endorse it publicly?

I meant that the current employers of illegal aliens will be ‘forgiven’ and exempt from being prosecuted. In some instances there are even RICO prosecutions pending as well as many that, IMO, should be pending (i.e., meat packing industry)

One does not have to hate McCain just because he is an arrogant, incompetent, ignorant, hypocritical Liberal.

There are a lot of folks out here on FR.com who have been critical of your boss for some while now, Newbie.

once they become citizens they cease to be cheap.

Yes, that might be true, but at least they actually show up for work and do their job.

Another generalized slap at those who disagree, on principle, with a very large portion of what McCain stands for.

Your argument has had no value since this nation elected a draft-dodger to two terms as President.

Stick to the issues.

Well, you may have been involved in this issue for some time, but if you think that electing a Dem president when the Dems control both houses of congress would be good for your cause, you are incredibly naive.
