Sounds like the kid was just really depressed - he didn’t want to hurt anyone else. My guess is he was a loner who everyone ignored, and he wanted them to notice him just at least once. It’s very sad.

I think you’re right. For whatever reason, he was in a lot of pain, and felt his classmates were somehow the cause of it. But yes, at least he didn’t want to physically hurt anyone else.
