DFL Senate candidate Al Franken owes a $25,000 penalty to the New York State Workers' Compensation Board for failing to carry workers' compensation insurance for employees of his namesake corporation from 2002 to 2005, state officials said.
New York officials have made numerous attempts to contact Franken about the matter since April 2005 but have gotten no reply.
Campaign spokesman Andy Barr said that neither Franken nor his wife, Franni, were aware of the matter before Tuesday. They have lived in Minneapolis for the past few years and did not know about the state's attempts to reach them in New York City, he said.
"If it's wrong, they will pay what they owe," Barr said.
"It's also possible that there's some kind of dispute that may be resolved in our favor," Bar continued. "This is, at worst, some kind of misunderstanding between [the Frankens'] bookkeeping system and the state's."
News of Franken's penalty was reported Tuesday in the Minnesota Democrats Exposed website run by Republican blogger Michael Brodkorb.

haha!! I just have to laugh... I love it when leftists get hammered by their precious taxing authorities!
Frankin is just another Millionaire Marxist.
Now THAT’S funny!
Franken is a Democrat....they are ALL CORRUPT CROOKS!
Workers comp may seem like socialism at first blush, but if it is, it’s corporate socialism. Workers comp gives companies immunity from having the pants sued off them via a negligence claim from an employee. I’m not sure how that’s a bad thing, unless you’re an ambulance chaser.
How poetic.
Yeah, the NY State attorney is really gonna believe that...............
Workers comp gives companies immunity?...................
“Franni Franken”-that is too good.
Coming soon to a bookstore near you, by the author of "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat liar"
"Al Franken is a hypocritcal, money-grubbing, cheap b-stard."
LOL No one picked up their NYC mail for over two years. Requires the willing suspension of disbelief.
Your typical lib... Laws only apply to the little people.
deadbeat alert
I am no authority on this subject, but I have seen this happen.
In theory, if an injured employee accepts a workers comp payment, they waive their right to sue the employer. However, the employee can sue the manufacturer of some equipment associated with the injury - then the equipment manufacturer comes after the employer.
When I lived in Minneapolis, mail from NYC found me within 30 days for a parking ticket.
No problem, he’ll just get the local Boys and Girls Club to pay the penalty for him.
How is the doofus’ scampaign going this year and has the issue of the stolen tax money from the Boys and Girls Club that was used to fund Herr Amerika been brought up yet?
Three years after we left Mpls, the state found a tax error, in their favor...
No, he is a liberal. No rules in his life.
