Sounds more like they fell for the “cask of amontillado” scam.

No kidding.
The floors of churches and monasteries all over Europe have much older burial vaults than these. Why dig ‘em up?
Jeez.

Some years ago, I had occasion to visit Salisbury Cathedral. In some areas, it's almost impossible to avoid stepping on somebody's gravestone. EVERY stone in the stone floor had a name engraved on it ... and the nave has several crypts with dead knights in them. The whole place is a massive grave.
Nobody seems to get upset about it.
