Too big (expensive) and MD kind of got absorbed into Boeing if I remember correctly.
I think there were some operational issues but I don’t recall what they were.

Because the middle engine had to be shut down when refueling AWACS! Plus McDonald’s quit building DC-10’s in the 1990’s
