It’s based on the A330. It’s mainly a A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) customized to the needs of the USAF. Other countries already use it. So it won’t take too long to get the USAF modifications onboard the plane.

A330 MRTTs are already deployed to the following countries:
England - Royal Air Force
Australia - Royal Australian Air Force
United Arab Emirates
Saudi Arabia

As you can see, Airbus isn’t new to this specific topic as mentioned in some other postings.

I guess on a plain unbiased point of view the airbus has its advantages. Especialy that it’s a already tested/in production configuration. Boing only can show up with paperwork.
