Junk yards don't seem to care.

Maybe if they charged them with receiving once or twice, it may slow down.

Scrap Dealers, of today, have “legal advantages” that were taken away from Pawn Shops almost 100 years ago. They can pay strangers, in CASH, for scrap. That “Scrap” becomes THEIRS!

There is no Federal Law forcing Scrap Buyers to try to ensure that the goods they buy aren’t from “out of State”. Nor is there a National Standard on how long a Scrap Buyer must hold Goods, before destroying, selling, or shipping them.

I work for our city water utility and the number of missing meters over the past three years has SOARED! It used to be they just took the meters and now its the meters, copper, everything...... the PVC industry must be booming because nobody is using copper for interior work any longer.

Isn’t that “Ready Kilowatt” from the 1950’s?

I'd imagine there would be two kinds of ground connections. One kind is the "ground", which might be relatively safe to cut, as it normally does not carry current. The other would be the "neutral", which carries running current to ground. Sounds like he misjudged a bit... ouch!

I'm betting he walked up to an underground distribution feeder circuit pothead and started hacking away.

He'd get as much current as the protective relays on the feeder circuit would allow before they tripped the breaker.

Yikes.

Every so often where I went to MOS school in the desert, some kid “in the field” at radio operators class would set up his antenna too close to overhead power lines or maybe not fully ground his set. Rumor mill said they’d blown off a toe or two.

I’ve had places in NY and LA broken into and burgled. I have zero, repeat, ZERO sympathy for thieves. If they die or get shot or thrown off the roof in commission of their thievery, I simply don’t care. They can all die on the spot.

Wait till your place is broken into. Good for an attitude change.

Copper thieves did $7,000 damage to my house and got away with at most $100 of wire.

I want them all to die by horrible, lengthy, gruesome, painful electrocutions. Those that survive, I want them placed in stocks in the courthouse square and horsewhipped to a bloody pulp.

This is hyperbole, of course, but only barely. These really are the most worthless filth in our society, and that's saying something. The vast majority of them are meth addicts who will never in their lives be anything but a burden and plague on their fellow man.

I’m afraid I’m totally lacking sympathy too. These people are costing other people huge amounts of money — many times the resale value of the copper they’re stealing. When they burn themselves to a crisp in the process, I think we should put them on a high dose morphine drip and just let them expire. Instead, a few million will be spent — by the same productive taxpayers who keep getting ripped off by these thugs — in advanced medical treatment for this guy.
