When Good Intentions Go Bad, Or Worse
Outside The Wire ^ | Bob Parks

Despite the sensational rhetoric, very few people seek to pollute. It’s not good business and all of us want clean air and water. However, when we get sucked into eco-panic, cooler heads seldom prevail. That hysteria costs jobs, and sometimes lives.

The latest eco-panic is global warming. One legislative solution was to mandate the banning of our traditional light bulbs, as they use too much power, and eventually contribute to global warming. That all gets shot to hell IF you believe humans are contributing to “warming” that may or may not be happening. But let’s say it is. Are we knee jerking once again?

These compact fluorescent light bulbs contain a small, but toxic amount of mercury that makes cleanup of a broken one more than just a sweep. After all the positive hype, we’re told that upon breaking one of these bulbs, one must use tape to pick up the glass, ventilate the room, and keep children and pregnant women clear of the area for a few hours. So these light bulbs may friendly to the environment, but they don’t seem to take too kindly to the saps that bought them.

Eco-panic has resulted in policy that runs the gambit from public inconvenience to, dare I imply it: death. Here are a few examples.

There was the panic that our use of paper bags at the supermarket resulted in the unnecessary cutting down of trees. With public pressure from environmentalists, paper bags were phased out (at a cost to business, passed down to the consumer), and replaced by the lightweight plastic bags. A few decades later, the same environmentalists are complaining that those petroleum-based plastic bags are winding up in landfills, are not biodegradable, and thus should be phased out and be replaced with paper bags.

It’s interesting to me that the majority of people whining about being “eco friendly” and “sustainable” are the ones dropping their half-empty Starbucks cups on the steps of my office building as they make their Wirehead Way through the crowds ... and are also the ones dropping their newspapers, candy wrappers, banana peels and garbage all over the subway and streetcar, and whose kids are leaving a trail of food scraps, papers, chewed gum and juice boxes everywhere they go.

Bravo Bob, another great article.

I truly believe that all this eco friendly propaganda turning into laws, is ALL about money. Money for those who will develop the newer more eco friendly products, which of course we all know they aren’t. If someone comes up with a product, and it’s too expensive to market, so people don’t buy it, he or she should just claim it is eco friendly and it’s inexpensive competitor is a danger to the earth. Wallah! Success.

There have been many studies done about the damage that will come from burring ethanol, using the fluorescence, and even the new ones about oil NOT actually being a fossil fuel as we have been told for years. Those studies do not get exposure, nor do the studies and reports by scientists who say that global warming is a hoax.

What’s equally interesting is that the same people who criticize Bush re: fearmongering re: terrorism are the most alarmistic people about future predictions far less certain than terrorism.

We know terrorism happens, see 2/26/93 thru 9/11/01 for several examples. We know what causes it. We know it will happen again.

We can’t accurately predict the weather day to day, but we’re all supposed to stop reproducing (actually suggested), using cars, etc. based on dire predictions in decades to come, but we can’t have the NSA listen in on a call between a number found on an al qeada website and someone within the U.S.

It may not be a mental disorder, but the left sure doesn’t make any sense at all.
