Chinese Submarine Fleet Is Growing, Analysts Say

By DAVID LAGUE

BEIJING — Several recent events, from an eagle-eyed spotting of an image on Google Earth to an overt military delivery from Russia, suggest that China is continuing its rapid expansion of a submarine fleet that would be particularly useful in a conflict with the United States over Taiwan, analysts and military officials said.

American and other Western military analysts estimate that China has more than 30 advanced and increasingly stealthy submarines, and dozens of older, obsolete types. By the end of the decade, they say, China will have more submarines than the United States, although it will still lag behind in overall ability.

“I would say that the U.S. feels a strong threat from Chinese submarines,” said Andrei Chang, an expert on Chinese and Taiwan military forces and editor of Kanwa Defense Review. “China now has more submarines than Russia, and the speed they are building them is amazing.”

The United States Navy developed a range of antisubmarine sensors and weapons in the cold war that are still considered the world’s best. But fighting submarines has been less of a military priority since then, experts say.

Well, if their consumer products are any indication of the quality of their armaments, their submariners will have a pretty high turnover rate.

Just wait until a Democratic Administration. We won’t have any submarines at all.

I am an AMATEUR analyst, with only private resources, but can see that China intends to be able to win a naval war with the USA in the West Pacific. To have this capability China MUST control near earth space over the battle zone. This is why the recent destruction of the derelict satellite disturbed the PLA so much.

Locating and destroying submarines is way different nowadays than it was 1944. What hasn’t changed is that it is a team sport.

Another reality China faces is that a naval war with the USA will provoke a US attack along Silk Road routes. US forces in Iraq are adequate to cause real problems for the PLA. A change in the American relationship with Russia is in order as well.

Of course China will fight us using the Sun Tsu Way. This worked for them in 1975. They hope for a repeat. Unfortunately this is where we are weakest. Or appear so, eh?

Do you think this will really happen soon?

Of course China will fight us using the Sun Tsu Way.

Yeah, they are not really good when it comes to head-on confrontation, unless they are vastly superior in man power and resources.

As you know, their concept of warfare is broad. Political maneuvering, fifth-column agitation, recruiting agents of influence, and economic disruption are all part of their warfare package.

Many in the West miss this point.

maye so, but the Cold war showed we're no slouches at using the same methods...don't write us off too quickly.

Is there a reason to think the U.S. will do anything more than protest if Red China invades Taiwan? Just asking.

Sometime between the end of the ‘08 Summer Olympics and early ‘09, I expect China to waltz (sail) into Formosa and flip us the finger.
Ya, Taiwan will bloody their nose a bit in the process, but China has lots of expendable noses.

Many here are too arrogant to listen to such wisdom, regardless of whether or not the arrogance is technical, political, financial, etc., etc. America the invulnerable, now and forever seems to be the common theme. How odd considering that once, for example, we made the world’s best electronics and automobiles and lead the world in manufacturing. Now the best electronics and automobiles aren’t American and you’re more likely to see “Made in China” than “Made in USA”.

The ability to build a sub and the ability to operate a sub are two different things.
