Does anyone seriously believe that McCain can beat Obama? At least as things stand today?
Perhaps that will change over the summer, but, from where it looks now, McCain will win maybe 12 states. He would get steamrolled.

I suspect it's going to be "game over" when they (Obama & McCain) appear together for the very first debate.
As a society/culture, Americans are very visually stimulated.
McCain will prolly walk all over Obama with his answers to the stated questions, but everyones going to be saying 'uh-oh' - we're screwed".
(and praying I'm wrong)
“Does anyone seriously believe that McCain can beat Obama? At least as things stand today?”
I do, I don’t even think it’ll be that close.
Well, let me check. Let's see ...... Flip, flip, flip .... Sunday ..... February 24 ......2008 ...... Yep. Here it is......
Rasmussen: 2/24/08 Latest Poll Shows McCain Leading over Both Democrats
So, in the middle of all this Obama worship and in spite of the fact that some FReepers are shaking at the knees at the mere mention of Obama's name, the fact remains that the adults in America are starting to pay attention and, even today, Sunday, February 24, 2008, John McCain is ahead of Obama in the latest poll.
The answer to your question would therefore be "YES! HE CAN!!"
But, if trembling at the feet of the Omnipotent Obama chanting "Resistance is futile" floats your boat, knock yourself out.
>> Does anyone seriously believe that McCain can beat Obama?
Absolutely!
>> At least as things stand today? Perhaps that will change over the summer...
Think about what you’re saying here, FRiend. Whether McCain would beat Obama if the election were tomorrow (”As things stand today”) is utterly irrelevant. McCain will be taking on the Dim candidate in November. ALL that matters is November.
Things will most assuredly change over the summer; they’ll change more between summer and November.
According to Rasmuussen's poll, released today, McCain is up 2% on Obama and up 4% on Clinton. Obama has topped out. My only question is, will he collapse in time for Hillary to pull it out?
Obama's response to the debate Q "what crisis have you been through that prepares you for dealing with crises as President" was the antithesis of articulate. He basically said (after long evasive stammering) that he's ready for the Presidency because he was raised by a single mom and made mistakes as a teenager that he recovered from.
Now that's a resume!
**Does anyone seriously believe that McCain can beat Obama?**
Absolutely. Just watch.
(Remember McGovern?)
