As we all prepare to spend a long weekend enjoying Presidential Savings on mattresses and used Toyotas, we could take time to thank some of the presidents who passed bills that protect some of the freedoms your enjoy daily. Or we could spend the day celebrating the presidents who are decidedly more Action Movie Heroes than diplomats.
Anyway, guess which kind of president this website decided to focus on?
#5.Andrew Jackson
When the 1828 election rolled around, a lot of people were terrified when they heard Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson was running. If you're wondering how a guy we're calling a bad ass got such a lame nickname, it's because he used to carry a hickory cane around and beat people senseless with it, and if you're wondering why he did that, it's because he was a f-----g lunatic.
Former Democratic Senator and Secretary of the Treasurey Albert Gallatin feared a Jackson presidency because of his "habitual disregard of laws and constitutional provisions." Or in other words, the man was a loose canon--17th Century Washigton's answer to Martin Riggs. Sure, he probably didn't have an irate black lieutenant to answer to, or a weary partner who was too old for this shit, but he most certainly had a death wish.
How do we know? Well, despite everyone's best efforts, Jackson was elected to the top office, and when he wasn't busy shaping the Presidency as we know it today, you could find him out back dueling. In case you haven't been to the 18th century lately, this unmanly sounding activity actually involves standing across from an armed man and shooting at him while he in turn shoots at you. The number of duels that Jackson took part in varies depending on what source you...

JFK shouldn't even make the list.
Nor should JQA. And I think it should be a coin-flip between Andy Jackson and TR for the top spot.
Yeah Old Hickory definitely should be #2. TR is solidly #1.
That article is a riot.
TR has the them “crazy eyes.” Plus it’s rumored he basically started a war so he could fight in it. If that isn’t badass I don’t know what is.
... and she knew ALL of them!...............
It was a funny write-up on JFK pulling women’s dresses up, etc., wherever he is ranked.
Andy Jackson could take TR. Hate to say that, but Jackson was more than willing to fight it out, right here, right now, all the time.
Good stuff.
I'd've picked his papa. John Adams was wee, but definitely a bada$$ :)
I’m guessing Cherokee.
Charleton Heston didn’t make the list? What about Jimmy Hoffa?
I’d like to give Harry Truman an honorable mention. He was under fire in WWI and wrote a letter to the editor threatening a critic of his daughter’s singing with black eyes and a crotch kicking.
Not to mention knowing when to use weapons instead of men to sort out the Japanese.
Agreed, Jackson had that pissed off roadhouse cracker air about him. The kinda guy who goes to fist city on you for just looking at him wrong.
I have to go with Andy as #1, he got a saber slash to the face from a Brit office during the Revolution. He got shot in a barroom brawl with future senator Benton. He kicked Brit arse at New Orleans. (Not second rate Spanish soldiers like TR faced but Wellington’s veterans of Waterloo.) He kicked Creek arse at Horseshoe Bend. He even executed his own men when he thought they crossed the line. TR may have been an officer-warrior, but Andy was a brawler. I would have ran from a confrontation with him. lol
The Battle of New Orleans was fought 6 months before the Battle of Waterloo. But your point is probably still valid.
lol, dumb me. I’ve read too much period propoganda. lol
Yes, and he really was all that. He wasn’t rowdy, though even if most of his friends were. He was cool-headed which is how he ended up in charge.
I cannot imagine any modern president with the brass to carry his own pistol in the White House.
