New York City is frequently referred to by its slogan, "the Big Apple." But if some in city government have their way, New York may soon be known as the town to "get some."
"Get Some" is the 2008 slogan for New York City's taxpayer-funded condom distribution program. Robert Peters, with Morality in Media, objects to the program both for its promotion of promiscuous sex and its false promise of safety. "I think it will be perceived by many people -- young people, in particular -- not just to get condoms but to get promiscuous sex," he remarks.
"It's like they have these hype campaigns and posters ... and television spots, and they're going to have dispensers for condoms in different parts of the city," says Peters, "and meanwhile, the statistics come in and show that it's simply not working."
The program handed out 36 million condoms in New York City between the Valentine's Day holidays in 2007 and 2008. During that same time period, HIV infections, especially among homosexual men, continued to rise. Peters also worries about the message the condom giveaway is sending to the city's children.
"Do six- and seven-, eight-, ten-year-old kids really need to hear and see the message, 'Get some New York City condoms?'" he wonders.
And, as a New York City taxpayer, he is offended that the city is using his tax dollars to promote irresponsible and immoral behavior. "[As] part of the campaign on Valentine's Day, they had people at subway stops handing out condoms to people," Peters points out.
The Morality in Media spokesman takes issue with the marketing approach being employed by the New York City condom campaign. "It's one thing to place a discrete ad for something targeted to an audience that presumably, genuinely might have a need for it," he shares. "It's another thing to splatter this stuff all over the television screen and ... all over the subways [and] the phone booths ...."
The City Health Department's assistant commissioner for HIV prevention and control, Dr. Monica Sweeney, issued a statement saying she hopes more people will take advantage of the free condoms. The statement made no mention of the increase in sexually transmitted disease frequency since the program's inception.
Isn’t that what they say in real estate? “Get lots”
We’ve gone from “Just say No” to “Get some”.
No thanks... I'd like to think of myself as a little more discriminating...
I thought the whole point of the condom was to keep you from “getting some”...
“Get Some Pie” in the Big Apple?

New York taxpayers are idiots for putting these chuckleheads in office. So guess what? Good luck with that N.Y.!
Why do they call it the Big Apple?.... No cherry’s left.
But the failure rate is fairly high, so it's pretty likely that you will "get some".
“Get some”: free needles, ganja, Wild Irish Rose......
...And all you New Yorkers watch out for all those used condoms on the sidewalk....like stepping on a banana peel!
Why yes officer, I did loss consciousness when I took a header after stepping on a used rubber! Thank you for your concern!
Wow - so we are finally “getting some” truth in advertising? :-)
