Police cannot prevent crime. They just clean up after.

Why didn’t the mom do something.

It's a shame, but at 17, you'd think there was a relative to send her off to for awhile.

I guess, even when people are afraid, they still think maybe bad stuff won't really happen? Poor girl.

I also wonder why the mother didn’t do anything. The first option would always be to send the girl to live with friends or relatives, but if she didn’t have that resource, I’m sure a battered women’s shelter would have taken the girl.

This kind of thing should always be taken seriously by friends and relatives.

What could the mom have done? The girl should have kept calling, and at least she would have been arrested and held in jail. It is absurd to think that is the only way, but at least she would have been in a safer situation. That judge that said the police have no duty to protect you, I would have asked “What are my tax dollars paying them to do”.
