Woman Found Dead Behind U.N. Building

NEW YORK (AP) ― Police were investigating the discovery of a woman's body Sunday morning on the rear lawn of the United Nations Secretariat Building.

There were no apparent signs of criminality, but authorities were still investigating, said New York Police Detective Martin Speechley. The cause of death was to be determined by the medical examiner.

The woman appeared to be a worker at the building, Speechly said. No identity had been released.

The body lay draped under a white sheet, flapping in the wind with rocks put around the edges to keep it down, less than several dozen yards from the rear of the 39-story building overlooking the East River. A half-dozen officers lingered at a scene visible from the large rear office windows that open from above in the 55-year-old building.

United Nations security guards and investigators put up yellow tape around the body and blocked some staff from immediately leaving the building. U.N. security staff rushed to the scene and escorted New York Police Department investigators and other personnel to the rear area of the building shortly after 8 a.m. EST.

Officers declined to answer most questions. An investigator took pictures of the body splayed out on the lawn. Other officers walked the hallways on several floors above, looking for clues.

In 1982, a 57-year-old senior U.N. official who had just resigned from the Office of Financial Services and was reported to have been upset about his failing health plunged to his death from the 18th floor of the Secretariat building.

Purely symbolic of the millions left dead under UN protection.

Hey, I’d throw myself off the roof if I worked there, too.

I thought at first they were saying that the body was “flapping in the wind” but maybe not. They also left out the “terrorism is not suspected” statement.

Were they re-enacting their role in the Rwandan genocide?

Yeah, this happens in my yard every few months..

I usually just throw the bodies in the dumpster.

It's kind of a hassle.

Perhaps just another honest worker who was about to report something criminal at the UN.

Well, at least the boneheads at the U.N. had enough sense to name one of their buildings after one of the greatest race horses to ever have lived. I’ll give them credit for that. Otherwise, the U.N. is nothing but a tremendous waste of taxpayer dollars.

"less than several dozen yards from ... "

What does this mean?? Just one more illustration of the ignorant press trying desperately NOT to reveal a fact or a detail.

Chalk this under “Unsolved.”
The murderer is likely a UN employee with diplomatic immunity.
