As Senator Hillary Clinton brings her struggling Presidential campaign to Texas, her visit is sparking controversy ahead of four rallies in the largely Hispanic southern portion of the state today, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Clinton is set to hold a campaign rally at Greehey Auditorium of St. Mary's University, a Catholic institution, prompting San Antonio Archbishop Jose H. Gomez to respond to Catholics who have expressed concerns about Clinton's pro choice political stance.
"It is clear that the records of Senator Clinton and some of the other candidates for President on important life issues are not consistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church," Gomez said.
"Our Catholic institutions must promote the clear understanding of our deep moral convictions on an issue like abortion, an act that the Church calls 'an unspeakable crime' and a non negotiable issue."
St. Mary's said it granted a permit to a student group to use the auditorium for the Clinton rally.
"As a Catholic tax-exempt university, St. Mary's does not endorse political candidates or their positions on issues and acknowledges the fundamental differences between those of the presidential candidates at the Catholic Church," President Charles Cotrell said in a statement.
Archbishop Gomez said he was 'neither advised nor consulted' before the university opened its doors to the Clinton campaign. A spokeswoman for the Clinton campaign in Texas was not immediately available for comment.
Clinton is making five stops in Texas Wednesday and Thursday, all in south Texas, where the Latino vote is looming large in the state's March 4 primary. Several key Latino political leaders incluidng U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-San Antonio) have endorsed Clinton's primary opponent, Barack Obama. Gonzalez father, the late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, was the first Mexican American elected to the U.S. House and is a legendary figure among Texas Hispanics.
This does not compute.....

KIlling babies can never be "the right thing to do".
“”As a Catholic tax-exempt university, St. Mary’s does not endorse political candidates or their positions on issues and acknowledges the fundamental differences between those of the presidential candidates at the Catholic Church,” President Charles Cotrell said in a statement. “
So why issue the permit at all then Mr. Cotrell?
You are right it is “tax-exempt” - and you are giving the appearance of support for Clinton.
You also claim this is a “catholic” school - but you are allowing a rabid pro-death politician onto your school grounds?
Time for a new president.
If Catholics voted with the teachings of the faith in mind, few Democratic politicians would get their votes . . . which would alter the political landscape . . . and force the Democratic party to open itself up to a large pro-life wing. Need to talk about the politics of life to the CINO’s in the parishes (when they occassionally show up) imo.
I contacted the university to express my displeasure...they took my name and number to “get back to me.” They are deathly afraid of losing alumni donations and endowments. Please contact them....

reminds me of a previous Hillary thread from her senate campaign.
If she is true-to-form, her thug bodyguards will prevent students from protesting...

Catholics are like Bill Clinton. They can “compartmentalize” their faith so that it doesn’t have any influence on their politics.
The only problem with that is that Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them.”
“Catholics are like Bill Clinton.”
Wow!
Incredible insight!
Thanks for imparting that fantastic wisdom while smearing a great number of devoted catholics everywhere.
What in the heck is happening with the Catholic religion?
Not only is she a champion of abortion she also is married to an amoral creep who accepted the Eucharist at a Catholic Mass despite the fact that he wasn’t Catholic.
“If Catholics voted with the teachings of the faith in mind, few Democratic politicians would get their votes . . . which would alter the political landscape . . . and force the Democratic party to open itself up to a large pro-life wing. Need to talk about the politics of life to the CINOs in the parishes (when they occassionally show up) imo.”
I was thinking about that exact thing myself, especially down here with the hispanic Catholics. Not only are most of them pro-life. They are anti gay special rights, pro second amendment, and lean conservative on alot of things. But for generatations, they’ve gone to the voting booth and pulled the “Planca” for the Democrats. They younger generation(Gen X) shows alot less loyality to the Rats, but we might have lost them thanks to the Tom Tancedos and the way the immigration fight was framed.
Catholics don’t always follow the Catholic religion, so they are separate things.
If they don’t, they are not true Catholics. I use to be one until a divorce put a stop to it. I would not join now even did not have to through the trouble. They have turned to Liberal for me.
What Hillary is starting to realize, I suspect, is that it is almost impossible to fight nothing with nothing.
Obama says nothing but he says it very well. Hillary says the same things that Obama says (although she was “wrong” about the war in 2002-3) but just not as poetically.
And there just isn’t enough “sympathy” out there for the “wronged feminist” candidate.
They say when the devil takes a fort, he doesn’t change the flag.
What is happening with the Catholic religion, is that so-called Catholics are ditching Catholic faith and morals, but still keeping their grips on the ‘Catholic’ label. A violation of truth-in-advertizing, a species of fraud.
If your position is, “I wish to high heaven they’d start acting like real Catholics,” my response would be: “You and me both, honey.
Our Grand Knight came down into the meeting hall and told the Council that of our 19 Parish Ministries, only three of them are led by men. That’s what’s happening.
Let’s hope the students at this college give Hillary the same sort of reception that Kerry received when he visited Ohio...
